Thank you Speedy60 .

May I quote, with absolutely no party political intent, Michelle O’Neill, Stormont’s deputy first minister:

"We |women ]are entitled to feel safe, we are entitled to be safe. We are entitled to go for a run. "

We are entitled to go where we want, run where we want, whenever we want and without taking special precautions.

Violence against women needs to stop. This can't happen without changes in society as a whole.

We need male allies to call out violent, misogynistic and unacceptable behaviour towards women and girls whenever it happens.

Boys and young men of all backgrounds should be educated in how to play their part in reducing violence against women

Let's not let the horrific death of Ashling be in vain.

This is an absolute nightmare for us women who run and for everyone who knows and loves a woman who runs. It happens again and again and all we're offered is 'let someone know where you are, don't run in the dark/alone etc' instead of addressing the real cause of rapes and murders, which is rapists and murderers.RIP Ashling, may you be the last person to suffer like this 🖤

Thank you for posting. I thought of her and her family as I set out early to enjoy a mysterious foggy London. Outraged and sorrowful

Thank you for posting. So sad that a beautiful vibrant life has been callously ended by violence. It gives us pause to reflect again on our society: on the one hand, its awful aspects, of hatred and terror, which, sadly, seem so tenacious, even in 2022; but on the other, also the amazing legacies of community, love and care that Ashling Murphy herself contributed to with such energy.💔

It's so sad that we have to feel 'brave' to be able to run alone in beautiful out of the way places. I have never worried before, but am becoming increasingly twitchy about where I run. It's just not fair.

Rest in peace perfect peace Ashling ❤

Bloody tragic. I like to think the poor girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time and disassociate it with the fact that she was out for a run...probably to make me feel less concerned with going out alone. There is no doubt however that we are only out alone, often at this time of year in the dark and in deserted areas because we run.

Keep safe guys ❤

Thank you for posting Speedy and I agree wholeheartedly with everyone’s comments. All our thoughts are with Ashling, her family and her friends.

Having been a primary school teacher myself, I also think about her class of little ones and how the parents are ever going to explain this to their children.

As women, we are as entitled to feel as safe going for our solo runs as men do running theirs.

Completely agree, particularly in relation to men challenging misogynistic behaviour.

RIP Ashling.

I must admit, each time I read about things like this, I get a little bit more scared. When I run, I am always alone and I run in some desolate places too. I must admit that though I hate running on the treadmill, it is a much safer place to run...

Let's stay strong and run where we find most joy. These incidents are rare. I keep telling myself I'm more likely to be run over by a car. It's just a shame we have to think about it at all.

So sad that it’s always women who have to modify their behaviour. I have lost count of the number of times I would have liked to go for a run in the dark, or in an unfamiliar place, but have not had the confidence. So sad it takes yet another tragedy for this to be discussed. My daughter is a similar age and lives in the same area as the late Sarah Everard and is afraid to walk her dog in the dark, never mind go for a run.
