I am really struggling to run. After graduating at the end of November I was enjoying the consolidation runs 3x weekly but the whole of January has been difficult due to ice. I went out this morning thinking it was wet but no, it’s black ice today. Yesterday was snow! I am doing yoga and I have tried skipping as someone else suggested but I’m really missing the freedom, fresh air and “me time” running regularly provides.
I thought I was enjoying C25K because of physical benefits but it turns out it’s much more than that.
Let’s hope for better weather soon and I can get going with Juju’s plan!
I have seen people out running but they have tended to be young and possibly fearless!!!

I feel for you, I have managed to continue running but only by choosing routes and times carefully often running round the roads of our village on bin days as I know the gritter has been. My young neighbours go out whatever the weather but only because they have separate shoes for ice, I shall be investing next year. Have you tried walking, the benefit is you are going slower so can choose ground carefully and ot also shows you what amazing distances you are covering when you do get out running. Good luck 🤗
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head grannyhugs. I have always walked miles with the dog as well as starting to run. She isn’t too well so it’s short walks on the lead. Seems both my outdoor persuits are curtailed for now and that’s why I’m feeling a bit fed up.
Our paths haven’t been free from ice all month but the bus route round the village is gritted so whilst you run after the bin lorry I’ll run after the bus!
Hi Sigh 😊 Your curtailed dog walk issues rang a bell with me as in the first lockdown I had a very elderly dog that I could only walk for 10 minutes. And know as you've mentioned the running was a great release mentally as well as physically. I think Grannyhugs has a point about walking, you can always walk the dog and then give yourself a walk to get that lovely fresh air if its too slippery to run.But I do like the idea of you two running after bin lorries and buses 🤣😂
I suppose I now have restrictions on my walks and runs and I don’t like it! I will take on board your advice tho and if I can’t run I’ll do my off piste walks without the dog for the time being! Might be better than running after a bus!
People who you see running effortlessly during icy days are running in appropriate trail shoes with hard grip (some have cleats, some spikes, and all are specifically designed for slippery conditions). I've got fairweather Asics, designed for pavements in dry and wet but not slippery conditions. Hence I skip those runs. If the weather like that is persistent where you live, maybe you could look into such shoes?
I have yaktrax for my walking boots but I’ve never thought of running in them. I’m relatively new to all this and if I’m still enjoying it this time next year I’d will definitely look to invest in suitable winter footwear.
A runner passed me whilst I was walking the other day, he was running on a very icy spot and he had his arms out like he was playing at aeroplanes?!?! I wondered if this was a winter running strategy?
Many of us are in the same boat! I started in April so I'd got a nice routine going of having a run every three or four days and running for 30 minutes was a breeze. I've only managed three runs in January so far and what I miss is the feeling afterwards. A good run leaves you on a bit of a high for the rest of the day. Even a not so good run leaves you feeling better because you got out there and did it.
Hang on in there. When the weather improves we'll all be able to get out for a run more regularly and we'll soon get our fitness levels back up again
