I decided 30 minutes today was a bit out of my reach following my consuming a truckle of stilton and some port (and wine last night) that is ignoring the ham, turkey and chocolate devoured in the past few days,
After 5 minutes of the opening jog I realised my ankles were feeling sore. I managed one "sprint" but walked the jogging section. I managed a total of 4 "sprints" and one jog out of the 6 and had to walk in between the sprints. I decided to make up for it with an 8 minute jog at the end and a 7K walk later this afternoon.
This speed interval stuff is like starting all over again! At least i tried !. I will do it again next week after fewer mince pies. I'm sure I will do better.
It is very odd after the past few months jogging slowly and now being told to do some fast bursts, I am trying to convince myself that this is new and will take some getting used to,.
I am looking forward to my longer jogs now this week!

I agree, speed work is hard! I think it may be that the sprinting makes us breathe so much harder and faster, and that was the main thing (at least for me) that was difficult when I started out with C25K. If I couldn't catch my breath I just couldn't keep going. I dealt ok with aches and pains and that heavy legs feeling and just overall tiredness, but not being able to catch my breath was just debilitating. I get that way now with sprints, so I have to go into it by psyching myself up mentally, acknowledging there will be some fast breathing but I'll have a chance to recover after each sprint. But it's still hard for me!
That’s great that you have a new challenge. I found it so enjoyable getting out this morning after all that extra eating and drinking over the last few days. I was feeling so sluggish and the run today picked me up! 😀
I used C25k W1R1 as an interval speed run yesterday...I ran/jogged, instead of jog/walked...
It’s amazing the difference in the exertion, I’m usually taking off my fleece at around a mile for my long runs...but I had to take it off after the first interval, I was so hot!
I shall stick with it as my short run of the week 😊
I've done speed intervals as part of a longer run, adding in 200 metres (or 45 seconds) of faster running amongst longer distances of slower running. It's a good thing to add into the mix of runs.
Another one is to do much shorter fast run/walk intervals, say 20s run, 30s walk.
I've heard of someone doing that before. I will stick with the C25K plus podcast first as there are only 6 faster sections then jog for the warm down. W1R1 has longer jogs/walks but 8 runs. I guess mixing it up in the end is the best way. Eventually I may incorporate some sprints in my longer runs. But I need to get this one sorted first.
