I’m on week 5 of B210K and loving my long runs. I signed up for the speed challenge in my shorter runs to have a fun focus and move my from plodding pace without fear of burning out too soon (work in progress).
But this week following the inspirational posters to these forums (thank you all) I decided to push myself a bit more. My 5K time had always been between 41:30 to 40:30. I aimed to get a sub 40 5K. I set out aiming to start comfortable for the toxic ten and the uphill start to my route, then aimed to keep each k under 8min/k.
As I set out it started to snow, just a bit I thought. It was bitterly cold so I think this helped me up my pace lol. I run in Capri 3/4 leggings, by the end of my run I could not feel my legs, I had to look down and saw they were still going at quite a pace (for me) but they were almost numb. The bit of snow was quite a flurry, it made it a magical experience and I was over the moon when I returned home to see I had achieved a sub 40 min 5K and knocked 2.5 mins off my last 5K time!
I have also since switched my winter running wardrobe to full length leggings and can feel my legs again ☃️❄️😜
Happy running 🏃🏽♀️

Wow Catho what a great run you had! Well done! I too am a plodder, it took me weeks to go more than 30 mins, and even now I am just trying to convince myself to push a bit more to go a bit faster. Trouble is I know I can do it🙄 anyways, great stuff 👏
Thanks. I was resigned to 40 min 5K til end of the year as couldn’t beat time, then thought trying to go 5-10 sec faster per km seemed more doable, especially after doing roseabi’s 1K speed challenge. I had decided to give it a go, and the bitter cold weather helped speed me up lol. You got this 🏃🏽♀️
That's a good way to think about it. I shaved 10 secs off 1k time in the speed challenge in wk 2, another 10 secs off this week will bring me to 7 something .... 🤞 Thanks, I feel better now! 😃
Happy to help. Everyone keeps saying you need the miles on the legs first and I find with time and my longer slow runs, my pace has naturally increased on shorter runs without me trying too hard and getting burnt out. So I just break things down, 1 k progress is good for me. After this 5k I improved my 1K challenge by 13secs, not a lot but I’m happy with that. My Moto is “progress over perfection”, some things just out of my control 🤗
Congratulations on your sub 40 5k PB Catho78 👏🏻👏🏻 take that hill and the snow out of the equation and I think you’d knock even more time off, well done 👍
Sounds like a magical run, snow whirling all around you. I’d have needed to put the Frozen soundtrack on! 😄
Great to hear you can feel your legs again - always a good thing 😉 - and congrats on the PB! 🌟 I definitely think the freezing cold can spur us on that little bit more.
These cold mornings I find are ultra motivational , I just love the fact that I can actually do this ‘out for a run thing’ 😂😂🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️Any runners I pass seem in the same cheery spirits too.
I’m finding the speed challenge quite fun to do on my short runs , amazing what you can do when you actually try !
I just like that I’m quietly ‘getting better’, never going to be a speedy Gonzales but I’m having a good time .
Well done on all your achievements and good luck with the challenge 👍
Thanks, and I second all you said. Loving that I can go for a run, because I can, love how I fell afterwards, and as for the speed challenge you’re right, amazing what you can do when given a push. I find my pace has naturally increased slightly on subsequent runs and is a maintainable pace 🤗 happy running 🏃🏽♀️
