Strange times my friends. I’ve not really been on here much over the past two weeks. I’m still running but if I’m honest I am starting to lose motivation, parkrun was my mojo, and I’ve lost that. In Ireland we are restricted to a 2 Km radius around our home. All businesses other that petrol stations and Large Grocery shops are closed. Thankfully my normal 5K route falls inside the 2 Km radius so I can still run my normal route. I am not doing anything else other than a grocery shop once every 2 weeks. I’m working from home. I need motivation, something to keep me going.
So I’ve decided to set myself a challenge. I’m going to run 5K everyday for the month of April. My 5K route has wide paths and cycle paths, and is usually pretty quiet so it’s easy to do social distancing. I’ve never had a beard before, I’ve been allowing my beard to fester for the past 2.5 weeks. And last night my wife Nicola cut my hair with a new hair clippers I bought online. 😀 I’m going to also keep the beard going until the end of April. It will go on the 1st of May. Pic attached.
Wish me luck. I hope all of you and your families are well and doing OK.

That sounds like a great plan Damien and that fresh air has got to be good.
I’m liking the beard, it suits you. And well done Mrs Damien for doing such a great job on the hair. My husband has already mentioned mutual hair cutting but I don’t think I’m letting him near mine any time soon 🙀
Haha I’ve trimmed my husbands hair but I think I’m happy to get creative with a hair bobble with mine, my husband even makes a mess in the garden with the hedge trimmers ✂️ 🤷🏻♀️
Keep the beard after 1st May, I started growing a beard before doing C25K, my daughter liked it but my sister didn't, however, the last time she saw me, like my daughter, she thinks it suits me.
Regarding that 2K radius, the 5K I ran this morning is my regular running route, I used that 2K app and as the crow flies so to speak I am just within that radius, but by walking or running the furtherest is about 5K, I wish you all the best for your 5K run every day in April, you may find that you will get a little itchy in the next few days regarding the beard but that will soon ease.
Cheers Alan. I’m over the itchy phase now. I’m thinking of getting rid of the beard at the end of April as I’m afraid that if I don’t shave it then and leave it a few more months I’ll have a tan on the top of my face only. 😂😂 Not a good luck, but sure who’ll see me?
Hi damienair ...that sounds like a really good plan...it's no fun when our mojo decides to do, one and I suspect that this might have something to do with the way things are at the moment and I am absolutely SURE you wont be the only one Damien. Your plan sounds like something that could work for a lot of people we just need to keep each other motivated...I just about to write my Quest for April...sign up to that and we can all keep each other going...give me half an hour....
Ooo nice beard Damien! It suits you. I like a beard personally. Mr Cheeky grew one about 10 years ago and it’s still going strong. 👍
Please don’t lose your mojo. We need happy people like you! 5k is definitely your thing, so I love your challenge and know you’ll smash it. Remember we’ll all be here to spur you on if you don’t feel inclined! Imagine all your VRBs cheering! 👏 ⭐️🎉🏃👍🏅
Sounds like a good plan Damien and the beard definitely suits you. My OH asked me to trim the hair on his neck and round his ears this morning with the trimmer - so nervous! I have decided to grow my hair for April - he is not getting anywhere near it 😂 I momentarily thought why am I doing this when all my events have been cancelled? Then reminded myself that I had no intention of doing events when I started C25k and remembered why I’d started in the first place - better physical and mental fitness, which we all need just now! Hope you are all well!
Thank you Sandie. We are all great. Keeping busy and keeping positive. I just need a challenge to keep pushing myself out the door.
Damien
Good on ya for surviving, and that 5k a day great plan.
I just hope that my Mrs Wife is as nimble with the clippers she's bought 🙈 currently she's practising on our spaniel 😬, I can foresee me looking like a bichon frise or worse 🙃
Like the beard and like the Plan. 😄 Are you going for the full Father Time facial hair or the clipped Sea Captain look? Quite jealous of the running as I am only on IC-recovery plan. But maybe by May.... 🤔😳 Happy running. 🏃🏻♂️👏🏼
I don't think that I could run every day, I need my recovery days. But we walk on the non running days and I do like the variation.
I am going to have to trim my fringe before too long. I am starting to look like a sheepdog. I am so glad that I had the big haircut before we went to lanzarote.
I’ve done 5K everyday for the month of January before, but like you, run one day and walk the next. This is my first time to try running everyday. I’ll just run it at a nice comfortable pace. Just out of the shower now. Run 1 done.
Looking good Damien! Beards are good! I’m contemplating our hair but I’m sure they’d rather I didn’t.
A great plan too. I’m going to RED in May if we’re allowed. Still trying to nail the HM beast at the moment, thankfully we’re not as restricted as you.
Ah ha , a rugged damienair, do show us what it looks like in a months time. 🧔🏻 😂
It’s sad to hear that you are losing your mojo as you are such a positive chirpy chappy. But these are difficult times when people are being cooped up, away from the normal routine of work and play and the social life that goes with it.
It just proves what good parkrun does when we are all missing it so much. We’ve only missed 2 runs but it seems so many more. A group of us who regularly have breakfast after parkrun are now doing FaceTime coffee breaks so that we can stay in touch, and talk about our runs.
As you know, I’m on the IC. You could say that if you are going to be on the IC now is a good time as I’m not missing Parkrun. But at a time when I am restricted in any other activities, I’d really love to get out there and run. I think I’m half way though recovery time and doing physio exercises everyday.
Having a set target is a good idea, so good luck with your challenge. And don’t trip over your beard! 🧔🏻
Ah thank you Dexy. I feel great again. Just back after doing my 5K. Had to abort the first attempt as Oisin picked up an injury just before the 1K mark. Sore knee, probably just a growing pain. So I went on my own after he hobbled home. 1 done.
Good move Damien. I have stuck to the every other day routine but decided to up the pace. On non run days it is uphill walking with our dog..she looks fitter already. She ate some passwords for newly opened apps today... not sure whether it was an act of revenge or just exercise induced hunger! I have even joined Mrs BC’s Pilates video exercises. Have to keep going...your mojo is just on hold for a bit.
Ah thank you. I’m a very Social person, I work in Hospitals for a Medical Company and I love working and meeting with medical professionals, fellow colleagues and friends. I’m working from home now and I feel like a caged bird. I’m a little lonely but I still have 2 little boys and a lovely lady at home to slap that out of me. I loved my run this evening, it was like a tonic.
Yes that is one big positive out of all the horrible things which are going on. We are spending loads of family time together. And we are all getting on fantastically well. We are being very patient with the kids and there are little or hardly any arguments. Weird times. Keep well.
That may come in here soon too. So far here in Ireland we can leave the home once per day to get exercise but stay within a 2 Km radius from our home. As a family we are being very careful to stay away from others and only I go to do the shopping now and limit it to once every 10 days. It’s very scary times. Stay well and stay safe.
Great plan to run 5k everyday. And good luck with your beard, I hope people haven't been stockpiling beard care products. My daughter and I offered to cut one side of my husband's hair each. He declined our kind offer - I don't know why 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you. I tried to buy electric hair clippers locally before the lock down and they were all gone from Boots, Argos and loads of other places. They were all gone. I got a great deal on eBay. It was so weird having a home hair cut. Reminded me of being a kid.
Great idea. I’ve been thinking of running every day but not sure I could manage 5 k every day. Good luck. My daughter is begging me to order hair dressing scissors and cut her hair but I’m too scared!
So many of us are struggling for motivation. Your post really struck a chord and I think the idea of a challenge is a great one. Good luck and stay safe. PS your wife did a great job with the clippers!
I do my husbands but he just has the shortest of short all over so it’s dead easy! And we haven’t even kept the guards for longer cuts, so I don’t think I can do my son’s 😬
