Whether you ran today or previously during a heatwave what lessons have you learnt and what wise advise do you have to share?
- wear shorts
- cover your forehead (headband/cap)
- apply SPF! Slap it on!
- carry sweets or have a sugary drink to hand
- seek shade if possible on the route or before/after the run
- if it gets too much, just stop (however much you want to continue on, although we all have our own threshold of what is ‘too much’ and tough it out anyway.

Reading some of the current posts from our most experienced and awesome runners today...the advice would be...if you can avoid running in the extreme heat...then do so
Sorry for the jargon! it stands for Low Carbohydrate High Fat. I find it a useful eating pattern to curb hunger and snacking and maintain a healthy BMI.
I went out this morning at 8.00 to do my 3rd 30min consolidation run, very warm, managed 25mins then stopped. Probably could have continued if a hill hadn’t been involved. I always wear a headband as I sweat so much. Would rather be safe and stop than risk being ill. That’s the nurse in me coming out.
Oh, and if you're near still bodies of water, lakes, reservoirs, etc, insect repellant keeps away the mosquitos, they love muscles full of blood that are working hard or have been : )
*A wet buff is a godsend! Wetting it down and wearing it around your neck is nice and cooling. As it heats up, I spin it so the front is on the back and Voila - feels cool again. Great to use to wipe the copious amount of sweat off my face. Wet your hat down too - nice and cooling.
*Take and drink water and/or sport drink, if it is a longer or mid length run. I have 2 water bottles, one with water; one with Tailwind which has sugars and electrolytes in it. I try to sip as I go.
*Run early in the morning, if possible
*Listen to your body - go slow, find shade; it's ok to stop if you need to.
*sometimes it's just too hot to run safely and that is ok. There will be another day.
It is just a thin tube of material you can wear around your neck or over your head like a head band or hat. It works great to keep the sweat out of your eyes I feel worn as a headband/hat, can be cooling if wet down and worn around the neck. There are heavier ones you can wear in the winter to cover your ears and face to keep warm. They are multifunctional and a great piece of kit.
This one comes from a running in the heat aficionado. Today I've replied to a similar query by listing my 10 commandments. They all work. No reason for stopping unless the heat reaches freak temperatures. Same with the opposite. Every year we talk heat and cold, hehe...
When I was running all the runs of C25K last year I always drank plenty of water the day before I ran, made sure the temperature was well below the maximum by running in the early morning not later than 9 o'clock. I now have a runner belt with a water carrier which is very handy if the weather is warm, even with that I don't fancy running at all if the temperature is over 24C/75F.
Someone suggested keeping a polo (mint sweet) in my mouth throughout the run as it’s meant to help. So I’ve been out to M&S today and picked up a pack of polos, I haven’t had polos in years! I remember when they were 10p a pack, now they are 50p 😂😂
