Bracing and blustery in breezy Bournemouth

Made the effort to go out for a run while on a work trip to Bournemouth on Friday morning. This was actually my very first run away from home. Hard to believe but normally travel for work ends late and meetings away start in the morning so not much opportunity. Add to that my useless sense of direction and I've never had the opportunity/confidence to run while I'm away.

Anyway, thanks to Pianism and her photo of Bournemouth sea front I made the effort, and there was no chance of getting lost unless I went north into the cliffs or south into the sea!

I set off from the Premier Inn and the 5 min warmup walk took me to the beach. It was a bit chilly. I could tell because all the non-runner people I passed were wearing big coats with hoods up and hats! Even the runners had leggings and jackets on. I looked a bit conspicuous in shorts and short sleeved top. What can I say, I live in Norfolk where it's warm so I was unprepared.

Lovely run east for 4 km towards where the sun should have been, if it hadn't been so cloudy. Quick stop for a photo and back westwards. OMG that wind blowing off the sea right towards me! I didn't notice it on the way out but running into it was hard work.

Also hard work was the Toft Zig Zag at the very end of my run. I run hills at home, some quite steep, but zig zags are a psychologically different kettle of fish. You can't see beyond the next zig so can't tell how many more zags there are to the top. I confess I stopped just over half way up, to take photos of course. When I started again I passed an elderly couple coming down, they clapped and said well done! That was a new experience for me.

At the top of the path the sun decided to come out for the first time on the run and it was great to finally feel it's warmth :-) .

Welcome to the winds of seafront running which we tackle each week at parkrun in Southsea.

Huge applause for going up the zig zag cliff path. It is bad enough walking up it.

Sorry the South coast wasn’t as warm as usual.

I was in Plymouth a few weeks ago and it was just as bad, probably windier. I hope Portsmouth in a couple of weeks will be sunnier, though I'll be indoors for two whole days so won't really be able to tell.

Well done on your windy run! And bless that elderly couple - crowd support ( however small😉) is always welcome, isn't it! 🙂

Just super... running by the sea is fabulous and photo stop runs are just perfect. We are running for enjoyment after all :)

I agree totally. I'd like to go for a run along the coast when I go back home to Scotland but my 80 year old father can't keep up. I have to content myself with hill walking and scrambling through gorse bushes with him.

That sounded like a gorgeous run, wind notwithstanding! I agree about zigzags - it’s unnerving running uphill when you’re not exactly how far there is to go. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Well done! I’d love to run there. It’s on my to-do list

The zig-zag paths are well steep 💪👍😃

They are almost perpendicular!!

They certainly felt like it. I'll get to the top next time, even if it is very, very slowly.

Yes, it wasn't the best week for a holiday but it was lovely running weather. Well done for running up Toft - I walked it many times but only thought about running it! :)

I've been practicing hills. The Norwich 10k has a hill at the half way mark and another one for the last 0.5 km. I figure that if I get used to steeper hills then the ones in the race will be easy... to be fair, most folk would call the Norwich hills an incline rather than a hill.
