Well, I set off this morning with 4K in mind...last week of ju-ju- ’s plan....shorts & vest, still too warm for any more clothes...people looking at me like I’m mental all wrapped up in their autumn stuff, car windows shut & heaters blasting away. I set off raring to go...Come on Bev, let’s get this flipping week over & aim for 10k by the weekend?? Right...

I was SO EXCITED, I bought myself some blue tooth headphones yesterday & couldn’t wait to take them on their maiden voyage. I decided on a podcast this morning, the lovely Laura counting my steps after my 8 min warm up...headphones performing nicely...until...it became apparent that the weight of the controls bouncing around at the side of my face was too heavy AND ANNOYING & kept pulling the blooming right bud out of my ear....grrrr, had to stop...maybe I didn’t have them in properly? so I’m faffing about, in the middle of the cemetery & then my phone started ringing, for goodness sake!!! Spoke to the ironing lady & stuffed the buds back in my ears, they were driving me MAD!! Swinging about, hitting me in the jaw, honestly, I could’ve ripped them out and thrown them, shot-put style, accompanied by a scream, into the field!!! I ended up taking the right earbud out & stuffing it into my bra & I HATE having one earphone working, it makes me all discombobulated...then, as I got hotter & hotter the remaining earbud kept sliding out of my ear!! Aaaaaarrrrrggghhhh!!! Get me in the shower so I can go back to the shop & bang these headphones down on the counter!!

Then, to top it off..after about 2.5k my right Achilles started to hurt, so I slowed right down by the time I got home it was burning, I haven’t done anything to it so I don’t know what’s happened there?? Anyone else suffered this??

So, all in all, it was a shoddy run with even shoddier headphones...but I’m closer to the 10k if my Achilles behaves....

I’ve attached a picture of a spare tyre too just because it made me laugh & kind of summed up my run...????

Happy running my lovely family xxx

Oh dear, what a shame you had all those setbacks. Be careful with that achilles. I had an issue with mine a few months ago and it took weeks to get better, although I was still able to run on it as it was more of a discomfort than a pain. I was told that foam rollers is a good treatment, but I have yet to try it. Post run stretches seem to help no end.

On the earphone front, I have stopped listening to music while running as I was forever putting the buds back in my ears. Even though I got the ones that clip behind your ears, they still kept slipping out once I got hot. I now enjoy the sounds around me while running, including my puffing and panting!

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toMikeJones68

Thanks MikeJones68 , I’ve got a foam roller but never used it...& I must admit that I’m not a post run regular stretcher either, I should make more effort, but sometimes it’s hard to squeeze time for a run in never mind stretches at the end!! I will pay for that though I know it so I should make more effort...I’m scared, I don’t want to be on the IC 😬

Don’t know if I could run naked (without headphones!!!) and listen to myself wheezing & panting I hate it inbetween tracks!!

Some basic stretches should be enough to help avoid strains etc. We do 3 basic ones after running at work and they only take a couple of minutes to do all 3.

Glad it helped, Bev-lar :)

There's loads more of course, but these are the ones our coach gets us to do after our 6k lunchtime runs.

I like this selection, I’m also going to try for them in on rest days Mike-lar

BTW, they are for warm muscles, so we do them after running. For warm up we do the first 0.5-1k at a jog.....

oh no... poor you! I'm no expert, but it was issues with my Achilles heel & planter fascia that got to me when I first tried to run a 10K soon after finishing C25K... so my advice would be to take it really easy with your runs for a bit & don't try & push that last bit to get to 10K until pain totally goes - just enjoy running again & then when pain is gone totally crank up to the 10K... I am still in my 'holding' phase (tho I have done another 10K with a little walking in a couple of places) & hope to start on JuJu's plan in next month or so...

As I said, I'm def no expert, so this is just from my personal experience...

& yes... RETURN THE HEADPHONES!!! :-) xxx

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toSuzyKK

Thanks SuzyKK ...I get plantar so I did wonder if it was connected, I don’t get it all the time & I haven’t had it for yonks until the other day, I was coming down the stairs & felt it in my heel, then when I did 9k on Friday I could feel some grumbling in my Achilles but then it went, it’s gping off a bit now so I’ll have to see how it goes...I feel like everything’s stopping me from getting to 10k!!! It’s so frustrating!!

Headphones are back in the box that I had to fish out of the recycling!!!

SuzyKK profile image
SuzyKK in reply toMummycav

No mine doesn't hurt most of the time, but slipped back in early July, while walking (not running) on a gravel path, & twisted my ankle... didn't seem to hurt with normal running step, only twisting ankle around bothered (bothers) it... but since then on a few occasions I've had twinges in the plantar fascia again... I always slow down & end run as soon as I can after it does as worried I'll end up on IC again... If you get any "proper" advice, let me know! ;-)

The tyre photo made me smile! Can't help with the Achilles but I ran for the first time with a headband/scarf thing on last night to keep rain off and found it handy to stop earphone falling out. Maybe try something like that? Onwards & upwards...

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply tojeffbird

Good idea with the head thingy, haven’t even seen anything like that?! I’ll be sat on that tyre sulking at this rate!! Lol

jeffbird profile image
jeffbirdGraduate10 in reply toMummycav

ha! the headband is this - it's just a long cotton tube so you can wear it round your neck, as a hat or a headband. I get cold ears so the headband option is quite nice without getting too hot

That's given my tiny brain too many images to comfortably handle! 😁

I've had days when I just wanted to launch my headphones, I've now got a set of wireless ones which loop around your lugs, no more pondside tantrums necessary!

Take it easy with that achilles, maybe a n extra rest day will help 😉 👍

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply tolardofale

Haha...images of me having a tantrum?!! You’d be right...the Flippin earphones nearly ended up in the beck with that tyre!! I’m going to look at those over ear ones when I’ve had my rant back in the shop this aft!!!

I could feel my Achilles grumbling after my 9k the other day...maybe rest ti sat and do the park run as my 5k 🤔

Well done you are doing so brilliantly!

I could never get on with headphones and only just put up with them to the end of C25K. Since then I have just my panting and thudding to listen to along with the birdsong!

Take care of your tendon. It would be better to get to 10k a week or so later if necessary, than months later if you got an injury!

Mummycav profile image

Thank you Mimirossi , it just feels like everything’s against me some days!!! Oh well, have to look after this foot otherwise it’ll be me in the beck sat with the tyre!! Lol Xx

Dexy5 profile image

It’s official Mummycav - the muffin top is no more. I am 4 kg lighter than I was in March and feel so much better for it.

I’ve read that some people use a buff as a head band to keep their earbuds in. My Bluetooth ones have loops that go around the ears but they can still move about if I haven’t got them dead right. Its still better than the cables going up your t-shirt to keep them out the way with the normal earphones though.

I hope your tendon is feeling better soon. You will get to 10k so don’t rush it.

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toDexy5

Well, you can claim my tyre picture then!! Well done you!! I use a buff in winter but not around my head, maybe that’s the answer?! I should’ve taken my wires headphones just in case all this happened..proper put me off my run it did! It’s still aching, I’m not really sure what part it is coz it seems to be down each side of my Achilles, will see how it goes, thanks Dexy5

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10

I like that photo of the spare tyre, as far as headphones, I recently got a new Smartphone, with it I got the type of headphones you described in your great post, there was also a small attachment with the headphones, however, after 1 minute of just walking, they came out of my ear, I immediately attached the small attachment to my 'over the head proper headphones', I can run with these without having anything falling out of my ears. 🏃

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toAlMorr

Grrrr...at least you conquered the problem though, good on ya!! Who’d have thought headphones could cause serious tantrums...in fact there should be a warning on the packaging!!! Just in case!

Isn't that the way some runs go! I had a crappy run yesterday too. I had planned to get some speed intervals in before race day but as soon as I started my ankles and shins were tight and sore and my legs were heavy, heavy. So I ignored all my audio cues, ran at a slow and steady pace and called it a day. But, you know, a crappy run is still a run and better than sitting on the couch stuffing our faces with crisps (which is what I really wanted to do last night after the work day I had).

Bluebirdrunner profile image

Hope you are ok after rest Allie...is your race on Saturday? We will be rooting for you!😊x

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply toBluebirdrunner

Ya, I’m doing ok. I’m not sure if it is my allergies throwing me off (harvest is going full-on around here) or just the last few weeks catching up with me. My legs feel pretty good today and i’ll use my roller on them tonight. I’ll do a little 20 minute or so run on Wednesday, keeping it easy. The race is Saturday. They are calling for rain which could make the trails very treacherous so we’ll have to see what ends up happening. I hope it still goes on. I’ll be so disappointed if they cancel.

What a frustrating run MummyCav😑...

I hope your Achillies settles after a few days rest..maybe still a bit tired after the 9k on Friday...

I would miss Parkrun on Saturday if its still a bit suspect, you are more likely to keep going rather than taking care of yourself listening to signals from your body.

I hurt myself yesterday by stupidly carrying on to get to 5k (trying for a pb) when I had felt little niggles at 4k...limping today 😮...

The stretches Mike has given you should be helpful. Take care 😊 xx

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply toBluebirdrunner

Glad you are feeling a bit better Mummycav😊...I am too, but still a bit sore. No running planned, but we are going on a little walking break in East Sussex tomorrow, over the South Downs which I'm really looking forward to!

Good luck, keep stretching and hope you're ok for Saturday😊xx

Fab post again.you have a wonderful, descriptive, humerous writing style.

I have some Bluetooth headphones and they turned the ringer off on my phone.i realise now it’s probably because the ringer comes through the buds, it I didn't realise you had to disconnect them via the phone after (I assume)and spent ages frontline in my phone settings to get the ringtone back.

I had Achilles pain when I used the heel lock lace system, so I wonder if you had your laces too tight. It took days to get better too, though it didn’t stop me running.

I bet your spare tyre was a swing for swinging over the water.

You’re sooooo close to 10k Bev. Go you xxx

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to

Thanks Flick...humerous writing, must come naturally coz I just say what comes into my head, that can get me into trouble sometimes!!! I never thought about a tyre swing, it will have been that I’m sure, no-one will have just dumped it will they?? I hate seeing things like that, we have a beautiful park but people just dump their rubbish, dog poo, tyres 🙄 spoils it for everyone else?!

I will loosen my laces because I have thought before that they might be too tight, a bit like my armband thing, it’s like when the doctor takes blood pressure, dead tight!! x

Ack! Poor you. 😕 It just wasn’t your day by the sounds of it, poor love.

Burning Achilles eeep. Well, certainly rest up for a bit. Gentle calf stretches and “toes pose” will help (Google toes pose - it’s a yoga pose, and my go to exercise when having niggles in Achilles / touch of the old plantar). If you have a massage stick get to work on those calf muscles now! But, most of all, don’t run until it eases off. Hard ball roll under arch of foot also good. But do all these things gently and back off with pain.

You are a proper runner who gets runners’ niggles now. But don’t despair, you will get over this! As for the ear buds - a buff will hold them in place! How bloody annoying that must have been for you! Eeeeeek.

Hugs,

Sadie xxx

Trekz Air bone conduction headphones—joint best running purchase I ever made!

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toSqkr

I’ve looked at these Sqkr , expensive but they must be worth it?

Sqkr profile image
Sqkr in reply toMummycav

They aren't cheap, it's true, but I absolutely love mine. Several people round the forum have them now and I think all have found them to be a worthwhile purchase, and I see them out and about on runs and at races more often too these days. My local running shop had a trial pair instore, it might be worth asking if yours has similar? I have the slimline ones, the Air, but they also have a cheaper Titanium model. I think the only difference (aside from price!) is the bulk. I've not tried the Titanium version, but mine are very light and easy to wear.

I've got narrow ear canals so buds never stay in, big headphones are too lumpy and sweaty and I also found the noise-cancelling a real problem for safety and general awareness. With the Trekz I'm not blocking out the outside world at all. The sound quality isn't as good as my proper over-ear headphones but better than a cheaper Bluetooth earbud, and they do bleed sound a little so would be no good for sitting on a bus, but they're perfect for running. I've had them nearly a year now and super love them.

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply toSqkr

Thankyou, I’m going to go to my local running shop & see if they have a trial pair, my earholes are small too...who’d have thought finding the perfect running clobber could turn into such a mission??!! Couch dwellers have no idea!!! Lol

Hi Bev

I have the same issue with earbuds I've tried all sorts. I always revert back to my in ear lightweight Bluetooth headphones 🎧 they don't look pretty but they do the job darn well. No cables yeay 😊

I also suffer with Achilles but I ruptured one of mine in a gym session on a treadmill before I took up running here. It flares up occasionally for no apparent reason before getting back in its box.

Haha great post Bev - sorry to hear about your Achilles though. A running friend of mine has had issues with hers recently and tapes it up with kinetic tape when she runs. It does seem to help.

Flippin’ headphones 🎧 👂- I feel your pain! I have bought 3 different pairs over the last few months. One pair (aimed specifically for runners according to the packet) wouldn’t even stay in my ears without falling out the minute I walked more than 3 or 4 paces!! Even when I changed the earbud size. Finally found a fairly cheap pair off amazon that stay on but really coveting a pair of bone conductors! *sigh* Christmas is coming 😆 😊🏃‍♀️❤️

Hope you make friends with your foam roller (it's s bit love/hate with mine but it does work!) and get back on track soon. You are so near and know that you have the strength & stamina to make it to 10k. I've put the fizz on ice already... X

1. Ironing lady - I fully understand. Mine is my only domestic luxury and I wouldn't be without her.

2. Abandoned tyre - I saw his friend last night when I was out.

3. Earphones - I think I added this on Strava. I have the answer to everyone's problems - just stick them to your ear with a small piece of micropore tape over the top. I have old school Amazon basics wired hook over the ear ones (last 12 months+ of sweat so far) and with the smallest buds and a piece of tape they stay put forever. Of course if you are worried about the fashion police this is not an option. The fashion police have far more things to arrest me over than a piece of tape. Oh, and I only ever have one ear in so as to be able to avoid being run over, the other one is coiled up in my phone armband thingy.

Fabulous450 profile image
Fabulous450Graduate10 in reply toMummycav

Unstoppable! 😁❤️

Not the best experience but nonetheless you've had a few good lessons in there.

I've also had calf trouble, no injury but probably due to fatigued muscles.

My failure I think was an attempt to increase my mileage by adding a run per week to avoid increasing individual runs. Problem was I didn't want too do anything under 5K, which I felt was a waste of lacing up - WRONG!

So, with 4 runs per week I was doing anything from 20K - 25K. From a previous max of 15K.

All went well for 4 weeks then the calf/Achilles pain come on and got worse after every run. Not so much during though.

I've had to rest up over the past few weeks to try to nip it in the bud and so far so good.

Have you changed anything in your runs significantly?

The other advice I'm taking on board is stretching A LOT! Another significant factor was a 10K Sunday run where I didn't have time to properly cool down or stretch as we had guests coming. Quite possibly the biggest mistake I've made!

Hopefully we're both on the mend soon and until then just take it easy and rest up and reduce workload - you know it's for the best!

😁😘

in reply to

P.S. Loved the tyre, it does just sum things up for your run!

P.P.S. I opted for true wireless earphones with foam buds (bought separately) which helps hold them in as there just like earplugs. The Tranya earphones are Bluetooth and I paid just over £30 from Amazon. I honestly can't fault them. I've dropped them a few times but that was because the foam had split and I hadn't replaced them timeously!

Thanks Hidden , the only thing I’ve changed is the distance, I’m pushing for that 10k so every third run has been longer..that’s all I can think of? I am going to be a religious stretcher because I’m not at the moment & by the sounds of it it would make a huge difference?? Having said that though, before I went on holiday I was running three times a week then in France, after the third week I only ran once a week so maybe my muscles aren’t as supple or ready as they were before??? The tyre did make me smile as, like you said, it just summed it up!!

I’ll have a look at those earphones too...earphones & 10k are my current mission!!! Thank you xxx 😘

Hi Bev, I'm hoping to treat myself to some bone conducting headphones for Xmas - maybe the ones that Sqkr mentioned. I am looking at Aftershokz and they sit on your cheekbones - tried a pair belonging to a friend. Sorry you had an 'off' run. I've been recovering from my barefoot 9km and it's not much fun being on the IC.

Having had the odd niggle over the months, I am a bit obsessive about stretching, rolling, strengthening and using a tennis ball. I think as we increase distances, it's a must. We are so nearly there now. I'm planning 9.5km for my next long run and then fingers crossed, a 10km. Good luck!
