To run, or not to run, that’s a very good question.

So, I finish work at 0300 today. I could be home, changed and out the door before 0400 and it will be 12 degrees with a 4 mph wind. If I wait till I get up it will be 24 degrees and 10mph wind.

I tried to run in the heat on Tuesday and had my first “failure to complete” and I was only aiming to do 3k, so don’t really fancy trying that again, but it knocked my confidence quite a bit, so I’m a bit apprehensive about going out at all ☹️

Might just have a beer and go to bed 🍺😒

That’s unsociable hours! Personally I’d do the whole bed thing... but then I’m a morning person...

Don’t let one bad run knock your confidence. You have done brilliantly to get this far... and this forum is full of support for everyone, no matter their run.

Good luck with the next run pet 😉

Well I did it, 5k in 42:30 😟 only the second time I’ve done that route, the first time was wk7 r1 of c25k and I was quicker back then. It’s got what feels like a mountain in the middle of it 😱

This run and even more the one on Tuesday runs my legs have felt like two lengths of cast iron hanging off my arse.

I’ve been trying to improve my flexibility with stretches, but I think I’m going to have a few extra days off running to see if it’s just tiredness that’s causing it. I certainly can’t go on like this, not enjoying it right now 😭

Aw, pet. If your legs feel like two lengths of cast iron hanging off your arse, there is a chance you have not quite had enough water the day before. I’m not great at the science, but I think it is something to do with blood - when you are properly hydrated, your blood is thinner, and thus it circulates quicker through your body, carrying more oxygen to your muscles, making legs feel lighter as your muscles can function at their best. In this hot weather we need to up our water game.

I definitely know when I haven’t drink enough the day before cos I always get the heavy leg thing! An extra days rest is never a bad idea, either...

I’m not sure if it is lack of water or something else. I usually drink like a camel, so I guess my body is used to that and would need even more in the warmer weather. Not that I see much of it working nights.

My last 2 runs at the start my legs wouldn’t bend to do a running action, I felt like I was in a pair of full leg plaster casts or someone took a freeze ray to my knees and ankles. Took a good 5 minutes to get them moving, but even then they complained for the rest of the run.

You did it though! I would have gone to bed, so well done!

When I looked up the road and saw how much taller the Mountain had got since last time I wished I had 🤣🤣🤣

WELL DONE! You did, indeed, do it, and after a late shift at work presumably. That's dedication. Listen to Sadie-runs about the whole drinking thing... she's normally right ;D

Thanks Neil, I appreciate your support, even though I can still remember thinking that I really was moving so slowly I’m not sure it could have been classed as running for most of it ☹️🐌

well done, you did it, and this heat really doesnt help at all... take a few days rest, drink lots and see how you feel. I bet you are knackered too with that shift pattern?

The shift pattern doesn’t really bother me, I’ve worked nights for the past 20 years, so my body is used to being upside down.

What I can’t do is work till 3am then get up and do parkrun at 0900, which is annoying because it means I can only do them if I’m on holiday. Shame they don’t do one on a Sunday morning.

My usual run routine would be to get up around 11:30, bimble about for a couple hours do some stretches and go out about 13:30 before any breakfast. This morning I had been on my feet since 11:30 and had eaten 2 meals during the day, so I don’t think that helped.

It’s just the leg thing that’s bothering me, knees and ankles won’t bend at the start of the run and complain for a good 5 minutes, couple that with a slight niggle in my left thigh and right calf and at times today’s run was quite painful. 😭

I’ve never been flexible, never touched my toes in my life. But I’m working on it, might just try to rest them over the weekend and drink and stretch.

I had a nearly a week off when life got in the way, the next time out was one of the best runs I’ve ever had. Seemed effortless. 🏃🏻‍♂️💨 maybe I just need more recovery time.

It’s the heat, YDGP. Saps your energy and affects hydration. Just drink loads every day and take your runs as slow as you need. I have put off a few planned runs because I just couldn’t face the heat. Yesterday I did 6k in 54 minutes! Took it super super slow because I was worried about overheating and I actually enjoyed it in the end because I kept it slow. I figure a very slow run is better than no run but even so I’ll be honest I won’t be going out that often in this heat. Roll on autumn 😂

Surely you mean “roll on summer”? Once that gets here it’ll be a lot cooler 🤣

you know, I’ve just spent the last 5 minutes trying to think what YDGP stands for so I didn’t have to ask and look like a noob. Thought it was a running term 🤣🤣🤣
