Attempt at 10k frustrated by dodgy Google Map distance calculations

So I had it in my head today to attempt to run 10k. I've been building steadily towards it since finishing the C25K in October, running every other day and steadily increasing distances, I've regularly being doing 7.5 - 8.5k so today was going to be the day.

It was beautiful crisp autumnal day a bit of a head wind, but nothing too blustery and the threatened rain never showed up.

All went well, ran a reasonable pace after doing my warm-up and without stopping I smashed what google had told me was 10k. I slowed down - did my warm down 5 minutes and then went to switch off my Strava - to find that according to it I'd only covered 9k. Gutted - cos I only stopped because I thought I'd crossed the finish line at 10k legs felt good - not out of breath or tired.

Aah well - it's still out there - and I'll get you next week!

yes a properly annoyed - should have known Google would be unreliable - but I'll chalk that one up to experience and make sure I do the full course next time.

How frustrating, I feel your pain. My garmin watch and Runkeeper don't often agree, but hasn't been that far out (My garmin always reads a shorter distance than my phone by a varying degree depending on how open my route is. I like to believe my watch but track all my runs on RK so am always running a little bit further than planned). Yikes!. The positive spin: given how great you felt today at 9k, 10 will be easy-peasy next week. You got it!

Thanks - did a faster 7.8k today, including a 5k at 32m (I've stopped obsessing about 5k in under 30m, that will happened as well in due course) 10k attempt this weekend

If you are using Strava to record and you are finding Google and Strava do not agree you could use the “Create Route” feature of Strava. I used it to map oit my 5k route and found it pretty easy to use.

But 9k having graduated in October - well done.

yes - just learning with Strava - just upgraded my phone so suddenly it can now cope. I'll give that a ttry - although at the moment I'm in - just do mode.

Oh i feel for you, that so nearly happened to me last year on my first 10k run. I only realised when i checked my time and knew I couldnt have done it so quickly. Next time out its definitely going to happen for you!

Glad to realise it not just me - but did feel a bit of a prat, sat back in my car.

😥 Bad Google! That is so frustrating. You’ll manage it next time, I’m sure.

do you think I can sue for emotional distress? I hear there quite a big company and in this liltigious society "surely where there's blame there's a claim!"

Thanks J-N-R aiming for this weekend if I can engineer the necessary time.

Nightmare mate, that's very frustrating. It might be an idea to get a device which you can check on the run as it were. I bought a fairly cheap Garmin watch which gives you your running time and distance at a glance, definitely helped me reach the 10k. You can snyc it with Strava via your pc if you want to check out the stats. Mind you, 9k so soon after graduating is fantastic, keep at it , you'll smash that 10k soon.

thanks LoA. You've done really well too as far as I can see from your posts - both come a long way - are you still regularly Lowestoft Park Running? - might see you down there in next few weeks if you are (just have to work around wife and daughter and foster child commitments to free up the time).
