So after reading all your advice I added the extra km at the start of my run. So when it got tough, it was tough on part of the route I'd ran many times and so my brain allowed me to plod on. Rather than saying STOP.
I reduced my pace from 8:20 mins/km to just over 9 mins/km. I also took water with me which must of helped.
