What Breast Cancer Survivors Need to Know about Osteoporosis & Vitamin D Deficiency

I was shocked to discover how low my Vitamin D level was, when I was first tested several years ago, as I certainly get enough sun exposure living in Southern California. It took two years, working with my primary care doctor, to get my level up to an acceptable number and then to find the right dose of D3 to keep it there. I take calcium and magnesium with the D3. I was tested every three months until we found the right dose for me - the dose can vary a great deal depending on sun exposure, diet, and in my case ability of your body to process it properly. I think it is also important to check the various vitamin B levels, especially B12, as some do not process it. Sublingual tablets are recommended as working better than one that you just swallow, though some people need B12 injections.
The good news for me is that my bone density test showed improvement once I got my vitamin D level up. There are clinical trials currently looking at the connection between Vitamin D and various cancers, and all of my doctors follow my levels. I've become quite good at combining various lab orders so that I get poked once and all of my doctors get all of the lab results.

Vitamin D plays a very important role in the body's calcium functions as well as body's defense mechanisms. We must all check our Vitamin D3 levels and ensure they are in the normal range.
