Hi Shirdi,

I wouldn't generalize chances of ovarian cancer to occurrence of breast cancer. Women who are tested positive for a genetic mutation in their genes (known as BRCA 1 and BRCA 2) have an increased chance of getting ovarian cancer (49% lifetime chance if you are positive for those mutations).

But generally, there is no connection of every kind of breast cancer to later being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Dr. Sumeet, please weigh in on this.

Dear Shirdi,

As Shikha has already mentioned that the risk for ovarian cancer is higher than the general population if you carry a mutation of the BRCA 1 or 2 genes. These mutations occur in only 5-10% individuals and if they are present they can increase your risk of getting breast cancer by up to 50%.

Hoping for the best.

certain tests are done to study if a woman suffering from breast cancer is have a 'fault' in one of the two genes called BRCA 1 and 2, either of which may be responsible for her developing the cancer. And if a woman harbours that faulty gene, then there is a chance she might pass it on to coming generations, and so, accordingly, there will be others at risk as well. Those at risk are called previvors.

Shikha has written very well on these genes. Read here:
