What is a normal post breastfeeding period?

Lb turned 2 in October and we have stopped bf mid October as i am due to start a new job in January and wont be able to bf when im working nights. Since then i seem to be constantly on my period. It will start quite heavily for 2-3 days then go to spotting for another 2 i have about 2 days with no period and then it starts again. This time the blood is darker (more brown than red ) when wiping. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Is it excessive or is it normal to blead this much after stopping breast feeding. I should probably also say that im on the pill and have had only spotting a few times since having my lb. This latest batch of periods is making me feel sick and very unsteady but seems to settle down after a day or so.
