Zolendronic infusion reaction

Has anyone experienced irregular and fast heartbeats after receiving the infusion? It’s now day 3 and the headaches continue, together with scary irregular heartbeats and hot flushes. Also a salty taste in my mouth. Would appreciate your comments thank you

HiSorry you are having problems. I was on Denosumab in 2016 and had to come off due to skin reaction and was prescribed on 1 x yr x 3 yrs Zolandronade infusion. I drank lots of water before and lotsbof water after to make sure I was hydrated. I did not have any symptoms, but rested for 36 hrs regardless on all the 3 infusions.

If you are having heart palpitations I would ask your GP to check on your calcium serum level and bones turnover markers to start with for hypocalcemia.

If the calcium serum level is low (that is calcium in the blood needed for your heart and muscles) it could give you heart palpitations , muscle twitches and tiredness. If you have not had it before, might be good t I ask for parathyroid?

I am not a doctor, just in January has my last denosumab injection, (the last one of too many I must say) and after about 2 weeks I felts very tired, with heart palpitations, poor sleep, my tongue, lip and left temple involuntary twitches. It is a black box warning now on denosumab leaflet of the possible hypocalcemia. So I asked the gp for a test and indeed I was lower than the bottom recommeded level.

I am making now making sure to assume

750 mg Calcium from diet:

- breakfast greek yogurt 2% fat 180 gr with 1tbs flaxseed, chia seed 1 tbs, 5 dry prunes at same time as vit d3 +k2, magnisium glycinate.

+ semiskimmed milk 200 ml pm,

+ 2 x 1 inch cube parmisan cheese,( at lunch time) +

+ 1 Adcal prescription x day ( evening)

and the symptoms have eased.

I will be retested again nxt week.

Hypocalcemia is something to look out if you are taking Denosumab especially during the first month or 2.

But I suppose, if the diet is lacking of appropriate calcium intake it can happen to anyone.

Hope you are going to feel better soon.

I have found that hydration was very important with Zolandronade. xx

Thank you so very much , I appreciate your comments and suggestions and will follow them all up. Very helpful indeed, having struggled with menopause symptoms for 30 yrs the infusion brought big flushes and palpitations on. I did have blood tests before the infusion but will contact gp for further investigation. Dietary advice was mega helpful , very many thanks xx

If you like cheese and can eat cheess, in small quantities, ot is an excellent way to booat your calcium intake. Good true italian Parmisan, Emmenthal, leardammer, basically hard cheeses & well seasoned also are generally lower in lactose content.Another option x lunches is plain cottage cheese, I always check out contents for no additives.

On yogurt check out the lactobacillus contents:

Research has indicated that specific probiotic strains, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, can influence the composition of the gut microbiota and improve nutrient absorption, including calcium, which may contribute to better bone health.

(2 Aug 2024, so recent research)

Ok that’s great to hear, normally stick to cheddar but cottage cheese is better for my tum, and Parmesan I really like!

Will check yogs and probiotics I buy.

Great thinking , many thanks for sharing x

Can you tolerate eating tinned sardines?

Canned sardines with bones are rich in vitamin D and calcium. They're a surprising source of bone-strengthening nutrients and are packed with protein, which helps fight bone density loss.
