Hi all, I was due to start teriparatide injections middle of January, I have now been informed that because of a shortage of supplies the drugs will now come from Italy! Not sure how I feel about this and whether I should be concerned, anyone else had the same issue?

Teraparatide shortage
Hi coincidentally although my course has finished I was still getting all the information re shortage from my provider. As far as I understand it the Teriparatide is just in packaging that was intended for Italy. There is no difference in the formulation etc, Everything should be exactly the same. Most important is you receiving the medication.
I wish you all the best. Happy New Year.
Hi, that's not how my letter reads ......."the product is considered licensed in uk'.......' has same formulation as uk'......but still says there are differences between Italian & uk product information, was already concerned about taking these drugs now even worse , thankyou for your reply.
I've had a letter saying I'll now only get one pack of teriparatide delivered each time rather than two, as they are spreading them out. So they now have to make double the deliveries! No mention of Italy. It is a bit worrying, but we should probably be grateful as you do hear of people simply being unable to get hold of their prescribed meds. And, unlike denosumab, it's not dangerous to come off teriparatide suddenly, should the worst happen.
All a bit unsettling but have to do what we think best and hope for the best.....I sound so negative but I'm actually not 🤭 here's to a happy healthy new year.
You don't sound negative at all! It's a worry to be on any sort of medication, let alone when things don't go smoothly. I must say, I have found the deliveries brilliant, totally reliable. I've twice been worried about not getting it on time before going away, have emailed and had an early slot arranged the next day! So hope that's reassuring.
Happy - and healthy - new year to you, too 😀
it has been licensed for the UK and is the same formulation. I wouldn’t worry if I were you, Italy is a major European country with robust regulations governing pharmaceuticals, this would not concern me at all. The risk of a disabling fracture would….
we all have that gremlin…. The chances of a serious side effect with a pharmaceutical treatment are low. The chances of a fracture are high….. the only thing we can do is follow the statistics. There are no guarantees whatever we do, we just have to make the most rational decision based on the info available.
Slightly on a different note, do you get this directly from the company or is it sent to your pharmacy for you? May need to consider it in few months so just wondering what wat its worked. Thanks
From what I understand it gets delivered to pharmacy then to me....a community nurse will show me how to administer.....that should be fun🫣.
Hi, when medications and treatments are in short supply in the UK they are made available to us from the European countries.
I have had many different medications come to me in this way from Germany, Italy, France and Greece.
There is absolutely no need to have concerns surrounding your treatment coming from another country.
It is like asking, should the Italian people be concerned about taking any meds that are sent from the UK.
The most important thing is that you are going to receive your treatment quickly, this could I hope prevent you having fractures x
I was supposed to start Teriparatide but told of the shortage too. I've been sent details of the Teriparatide Teva pen. They told me I'll wait till February.
I was due to have my regular quarterly infusion of Ibandronate next week and received notification about 2 weeks ago to say appointment cancelled until further notice due to "manufacturing supply issues". Is this becoming a wider issue I wonder...
