Hi can you tell me would a thyroid test show if you had Hyperparathyroidism or is this a separate test altogether.

Think one way to find out is with a blood test for PTH

‘What blood test shows hyperparathyroidism?

The PTH test measures the level of parathyroid hormone in the blood. PTH stands for parathyroid hormone. It is a protein hormone released by the parathyroid gland. A laboratory test can be done to measure the amount of PTH in your blood.’

So is that a separate blood test to the thyroid test?

Well, I was diagnosed when I fractured my wrist and it was done along with several other things they were testing for that could cause osteoporosis, I think they possibly tested for coeliac but there were several other tests and I can’t remember what they were but I suppose they could do PTH alone

Yes. Completely separate

The 4 parathyroid glands are totally separate from the thyroid gland. To test for hyperPARAthryoidism, you need to test vitamin D, calcium and parathyroid levels from the same blood draw. Many doctors will only test parathyroid levels if calcium is too high, but it's possible to have normal calcium and raised parathyroid, so normal calcium shouldn't be a reason for refusing the test.

I have only had test for thyroid and calcium which was high so suggested stopping calcium supplements and just take vitamin D.

If your calcium was high, you need a parathyroid test, with a repeat vitamin D and calcium test at the same time, because they all interact. Hyperparathyroidism is a known cause of high blood calcium and also of osteoporosis.

Do you have or have had hyperparathyroidism? I ask because you always give the advice I would have given and Ive had it and been cured.....😊

I don't, but a couple of people in my support group have had surgery for it recently. They got tested after others in the group told them how important it is. It really annoys me that so many GPs don't seem to know about this.

No better when you finally get an endo appointment......Thank you for letting eveyone know its a very common disease but poorly understood 😠

in reply toMet00

I had blood tests which showed very high calcium levels and after a scan they found a benign tumour on the left side of my thyroid am on medication because they can't remove it due to a stroke on the same side so it's too risky.

I hadn't realised thyroid issues can also affect blood calcium levels. Every day is a school day! Sorry that you're not able to have surgery and I hope the medication is working.

Hello. I had hyperparathyroidism… it is absolutely nothing to do with the thyroid… a completely separate blood test.

Hope that helps,

Fran 😉

hi

I had high calcium in routine ra blood test a year ago,so my rheumatologist referred me to endocrinologist, which took a year and had a pth blood test which was separate test.am seeing endocrinologist on Wednesday with plan of treatment if necessary.i had to take 1000mcg d3 before special blood test and now take it every day.will put outcome of appointment on Wednesday.not really keen to have op on parathyroid glands and am hoping it has all improved with d3 daily!x

You need surgery not treatment...

There is no single test to identify this condition. After years of misdiagnosis, I started running my own PTH, blood calcium, and Vit D. Several doctors ran them, and stopped after one testing...saying my calcium was "in range" so all was fine. NO! It was not. There are lab ranges still including children in the average, and that's a fatal flaw...children can have high calcium and be fine...anyone over 35 cannot have it over 10.0 and be fine. My calcium never got higher than 10.4, mostly it hung around 10.0-10.3...PTH normal for me is 19....it was slowly climbing over several years...the range is too broad. It finally reached over 100, and I knew the doctors were wrong. My Vit D stayed around 50-60...which threw them off as well...I live in a southern area, very warm, lots of sun, and take a supplement daily. I self referred to doctors in Tampa FL at the Norman Center, used their app as well....and had the tumor removed...but it had already caused massive damage to my hands/wrists, nerves, and spine. The scans are faulty at best, unless somewhere does a high volume and are very good at it.

Hi all,

Just wanted to drop a link to our information on hyperparathyroidism, and note that treatment required will depend on the type and severity of hyperparathyroidism: strwebprdmedia.blob.core.wi...

Just to note that our health information reflects that we are a charity based in the UK.

Hope that helps :)

All the very best,

Hope you already found an answer. But here ya go. No, thyroid is totally different. The only way to check for hyperparathyroid is to test PTH, calcium and Vit D, ALL IN THE SAME BLOOD DRAW. Also, your PCP or endo may order a 24 hr urine calcium test.
