Root Cause Protocol

Has anyone heard anything about the Root Cause Protocol for osteoporosis? It has you stop taking calcium supplements and Vitamin D and instead getting these from food. A friend has osteoporosis and her DEXA scans have increased twice with the latest being a 6.6 increase in her lumbar spine. It's intriguing but I'm trying to do my homework first before considering it.

I have osteoporosis (worst is lumbar spine -2.5) and am currently on a drug holiday from Reclast IV after taking it for 3 years.

I've never heard of it, but have just googled it and see there are plenty of warnings about it not being based on good evidence, with some describing it as a scam. If it suggests getting vitamin D from food, I definitely wouldn't trust it, as it's extremely difficult to get enough D from diet. Our bodies are designed to make Vitamin D from sunshine, which is why so many of us in the northern hemisphere have low blood D levels. Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium, so if we're deficient in D, we'll almost certainly not absorb enough calcium.

I can possibly see the point of stopping some of the things shown on Phase O but it all seems a bit ‘snake oil” to me.

I would never stop my vitamin D3, basically I agree with those who describe it as ‘a scam’ and I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

Hi,

We just wanted to drop by to share some information as calcium and vitamin D have been popular topics recently 😊 We know calcium is important for bone strength, and it is recommended that we try to get the calcium we need from our diet. You may find you're getting all the calcium you need, without taking a supplement. We have more information about the recommended daily amount, calcium-rich foods, and a calcium calculator on our website: theros.org.uk/information-a...

If you find you often don't get enough calcium in your diet, a calcium supplement might be an option. However, too much calcium may increase your risk of other health problems. So, if you think you're getting enough from your diet, it’s best to talk to a healthcare professional about whether a supplement is necessary.

Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb and use calcium, and we can get vitamin D from sunlight, food, or supplements. If you have osteoporosis, it's usually recommended you take a supplement all year round, especially if you take an osteoporosis treatment. If your healthcare professional thinks you need a vitamin D supplement, they'll advise you on the dose to take. We have lots more information about vitamin D: theros.org.uk/information-a...

We hope this might be helpful for anyone coming across these topics 😊

All the best,

Lulu

Thank you so much - the ROS Moderator comments are so helpful on this site. I think we are all finding that there is a gap in support from the medical profession for OP generally post diagnosis and going “off piste” on line, seeking info can be a minefield - so reassuring to have these interventions from the ROS pointing us to good trustworthy info.

I don't think I'd stop taking calcium unless you know you're getting enough from your diet. While some foods contain vitamin D, it can be challenging to get sufficient amounts from diet alone.

Thank you for all who took the time to check Root Cause Protocol and offer feedback. Your suspicions mirror mine, especially since the founder, Moreley Robbins is a hospital administrator, not a trained medical professional, to my knowledge.

With that said, it's hard to dismiss my friend's (a practicing RN) solid and unheard of results. After 3 years of Reclast IV, my numbers have just held steady. This is good, but I'm wondering if there's more I can do than just not get worse. My latest DEXA (1/2024) showed: spine: -2.5, femur: -1.9, and hip: -1.0.

My friend says she takes 2 parts magnesium to 1 part calcium, and liquid boron 3-6 mg. / day.

If anyone has any links to reviews I'd appreciate it and thanks again for your help.
