K2 supplements

Which K2 supplement is best for osteoporosis? Do I need to take it? I already take Alendronic Acid and Accrete. I do lots of weight bearing exercises and walk five miles wearing a weighted vest most days. I'm not due another dexa scan for at least a year so I want to make sure I'm doing all I can to improve my density. I eat a good diet including prunes and lots of kale etc.

Thank you

Most of us in the UK who do supplement with K2 take K2-MK7, which is readily available and not too expensive. The alternative is K2-MK4, but that's very expensive and much harder to find. The alternative is to eat lots of natto (fermented soy)! K2 is recommended because it helps send calcium to the bones, but whether or not you choose to take it is entirely up to you. Many doctors have never heard of it, or confuse it with K1.

I assume Accrete is calcium and Vitamin D. NICE recommends getting calcium from diet if at all possible, although doctors often seem to prescribe it as a matter of course when osteoporosis is diagnosed! If you do take a calcium supplement, K2 is possibly more important, as there's a risk of supplemental calcium causing heart and/or kidney issues - K2 helps to mitigate this risk.

Thank you. That's very helpful.

This is from chick peas, not Natto. Would you say it is not as good as “from Natto?”. Stores like Costco and Walmart seem to be selling this a lot lately.

Sorry, I actually don't know whether the source of the K2 matters. Some people say it should come from natto, but I haven't seen (or looked for) any studies to support this. When I mentioned natto, it was as a food source of K2, for those who don't want to take a supplement.

Hi Alendronic2024 ,

It sounds like you're working really hard to improve your bone density, it's inspiring to read. Just wanted to share some information we have about vitamins and osteoporosis:

Thank you that's really useful. It looks like I probably have enough vitamin K in my diet as it is. I don't want to take unnecessary supplements if my diet is sufficient.

You need to be aware though that, unless you eat a lot of natto, it's almost impossible to get enough K2 from diet alone. There's a very good article about it here: drstevenlin.com/what-are-th...

Thank you, it's all rather confusing. I may buy some natto which looks rather unappetising 🤔

🤣 From what I’ve read in the past it seems to be an acquired taste and can be pretty disgusting for those not used to it.

Hi

I am taking K2 MK 7 after i had a look on the web for which type but I am taking these whilst i am having a break from the Bisphosphate drug. See what happens after 2 years on them via DEXA scan results. Not sure I would take them as well though.

Thank you. Its difficult to know what to do for the best. I think I'll ask for a medication review after I complete two years of the Alendronic Acid and the Acreete. I'm going to push for a dexa scan too as it'll probably take at least six months to get one. I request my calcium and vitamin d levels are checked every six months and they are good so far. I'll keep up the exercising and having a good diet. Onwards and upwards!

Good idea. The problem with this condition is it takes a long time before you see the impact of changes made now. I am hoping for a change that means i wont need Ibandronic acid again. Not sure if this is realistic.

Must admit I'm not hopeful but you never know......if it stays the same then I guess that's better than nothing.

You raise a very valid point as when I was first diagnosed I was told that they aim to prevent further bone density reduction and then as you age you catch up to what your bone density should be. Meaning that due to ageing our bone density decreases and this is a natural ageing process.

It would be nice to know how many people have had positive results from a second dexa scan after taking Alendronic Acid and Acreete, doing weight bearing exercises, pilates, eating prunes and a healthy diet for 2/3 years as well as walking five miles most days wearing a weighted vest!

Yes it would be great to quantify this. The big problem is getting enough data and you need a lot of samples to be statistically significant so that a recommendation can be made.
