I am a 74 year old woman with osteoporosis. I have taken 1 prolia shot 6 months ago and am scheduled for the second shot Oct. 10. I don't wish to continue on Prolia because I believe it is affecting my immune system. I can't take zoledronic acid because of kidney disease (CKD3a). Alendronate weekly would be the most appropriate and effective relay drug, but my primary is saying I am ineligible to take it. I was on and off alendronate for a total of 7 years, ending more than 18 years ago in 2005. After 18 years, I would think that there is very little left of bisphosphonate in my bones. Also, I read about drug holidays, where people go off for 5 years and go back on, but the literature does not go beyond 10 years of use. I have been unable to get an answer to the question of whether I can use alendronate to get off Prolia, and how long would I be able to take it. I even called Organon, the manufacturer, and they did not have an answer. My nephrologist refuses to answer the question. My rheumatologist says "just take the Prolia". I have scoured the literature and can't get an answer. Does anyone out there have any experience with alendronate over many years? I need about a 15 year program (if I live that long) of management for this condition. The Prolia shot is due this Tuesday, so any help would be appreciated.

Your immediate issue is stopping Prolia. Fortunately you have only had one injection and so should not need to take a relay drug. This is documented in the published medical literature researchgate.net/publicatio... After more than one injection, you run the risk of multiple vertebral fractures if you don't take a relay bisphosphonate for at least 2 years.
Unfortunately I can't help you with the second part of your question which is what to take in the long term for osteoporosis. I'm sure others will jump in here with suggestions. At least the pressure is off for your 10 Oct deadline and you have time to decide what to do next.
You’ve only had one prolia? If so, there is no issue for you. Maybe just have a good diet plus vitamin K2 etc.
Definitely, why risk taking drugs when there are natural alternatives that work. Vitamin D K2 Magnesium Vitamin C and a good diet. Make an appointment with a recommended Nutritionist and turn your life around. I am 71, Tap dance, walk, practice x 2 a week yoga, was diagnosed 20 years ago and NEVER taken pharma' drugs.
You didn’t mention if you had osteoporosis and what stage. Thank you
I was diagnosed with osteopenia in my late 40's and then went on to have full blown osteoporosis, in my early 50's, I don't know what stage, but in my hips and back. I had regular DEXA scans and each time they got worse, until I started my vitamin regime, and then they progressively improved. It is 7 years since I had a DEXA scan, I have no intention of ever having another, I believe in the supplements I am taking, and don't want to risk any more radio-active scans.
Why don't you find a highly qualified Nutritionist, it could save your life.
Good luck
Hello - are you in the uk?
I’ve always found the specialist nurses at the Royal Osteoporosis Society to be hugely informative. They will spend as much time on the phone with you as you need. X
