Hello first time posting on here, I've recently had my first zoledronic acid infusion for osteoporosis 4 weeks ago and now I need 2 teeth out and have been told I have to wait 3 months because of the infusion, I'm in pain all the time and also taking antibiotics for the 2nd time as keep getting infections as my teeth really need to come out and don't know how I'm going to go till November, I've been reading up in why I can't have the extractions and it's something called osteonecrosis which read quite horrific, although it says it's rare it's still something you can get from having an extraction, just wanted to know if anyone has had an extraction while having zoledronic acid infusion as I'm very worried about having my teeth out now.
Tooth extraction : Hello first time... - Bone Health and O...
Tooth extraction
I'm sorry I can't helpBut wanted to.offer some empathy, support and love.
Hang on in there. Ÿou will find a way through.
First I would like to say I have posted on here before I didn't realise I was posting on this site at the time as I was just googling for some help, anyway thank you so much for your reply and supportive words I just can't believe I'm in this situation what we're the chances of needing teeth out after this infusion , but I think I will ring the royal osteoporosis helpline just for a bit of advice and see what they say because Google can really frighten the life out of you can't it but thank you again for reply x
Hi, I had extraction of impacted wisdom tooth and removal of a cyst which had grown underneath, even had stitches in my gum. I was having Prolia injections at the time which has the same risks as regards to tooth extraction. I was fine it healed well. I was put on antibiotics, and regular antibacterial mouthwash afterwards. I had no problems. I did have this procedure done in hospital by an oral surgeon not a dentist. I was told that all tooth extractions for people on these drugs should be done in hospital.
Thank you that sounds promising yes I think I would feel better to have teeth out in hospital my dentist didn't know much about all this he wanted to do the extractions the week after my infusion! So he can't know the risks anyway, did your dentist refer you to the hospital for the procedure or did you see your doctor ? Thank you x
My dentist referred me to the hospital.
OK thank you jimister x
Hope you get it sorted soon, waiting to be seen by the hospital can be a bit of a wait, which is not ideal when you are in pain. These drugs are a bit of a nightmare when it comes to needing dental treatment. Nothing is ever straightforward.
Dab some pure organic neem oil on the sore teeth with a cotton bud. Do it before bed so your mouth is still. Really works well. I also use a sport mouth guard cut to size on my bottom teeth which stops me grinding through the night and making it worse. Good luck.
I had a tooth out while taking alendronic acid. I knew my dentist needed to know about me taking alendronic acid but didn't know why. The extraction went ok but because of the effects of the alendronic acid the bone in the jaw took much longer to heal than it would normally. Make sure you follow your after care instructions to the letter, because that's where problems can arise. I must say that having the extraction put me off taking alendronic acid and I don't take it now. But I do think you will be ok so try not to worry. In the meantime have you been offered antibiotics for any infection? Oil of cloves can give short term relief for pain.
Hello and thank you for your reply yes I'm on antibiotics at the moment because the infection keeps coming back till I have it out but the thought of waiting till November I can't have antibiotics till then I wouldn't have thought , I wouldn't be so worried if it wasn't for this osteonecrosis of the jaw you can get from having the tooth out it sounds horrendous wish I hadn't googled it , I was just told can take longer to heal but I will see how it goes and thank you for advice x
I’m on alendronic acid, and had to have two extractions. My dentist was aware of the risks, but was confident in his treatment. I had antibiotics for a couple of days before the procedure and a week after, along with a mouthwash. I then had an implant, with the same antibiotic regime and it’s been fine.
Thanks for your reply , I don't think my dentist is up on all this because he wanted to do the extraction a week after my infusion I did explain it to him but he said ot would be OK so I've lost trust in him now and I've had the same dentist for 25 years and it's the first time I've ever been worried about having g treatment by him so I might see about getting referred to have them out I think if he had been aware of the risks I wouldn't have thought he would of suggested I had the extraction that quick .
It must take time for the medication from the infusion to get into your system, so maybe the dentist was wanting to do the extraction very quickly after the infusion for this reason?
the onj issues are said to be more related to patients who have had large doses of osteoporosis drugs in cancer treatments, all tragic.
Thank you for your reply , I still haven't had my tooth out and been 3 months now I'm going to wait a bit longer as I still have pain from 2 fillings I had a while ago, I was told I can have fillings but not extraction so I had 2 fillings but been in pain ever since so not sure if the fillings have anything to do with the infusion it looks like it does , x
I thought the problem for some is healing time. My friend was on fosamax and learned about jaw risks and went off the fosamax because she at the same time was doing one hour of weights per day. I think her second dexa showed better numbers so now she just does weight class once per day. She refuses to do any medicine for OP again.
Thanks for your reply, yes it's about healing but there is a risk of something else which I can't think of the name now which is quite nasty and the bone can come through the jaw but I've had one infusion I don't think I will carry on having them .
Ok but if you stop then you have to have follow up medicine with tablets or you can get worse bone loss than how you started
In a weird way it feel like the men creating these drugs are against women - in that there is not enough communication about potential side effects or they should take some of the drugs off the market or there should be class action lawsuit
Agree with you there, oh I didn't know that about having to follow up with meds but I definitely won't be taking the tablets so I will probably have to carry on with infusion but don't really want to, will see nearer the time just want to get this tooth taken out in November.
Is the tooth its own situation or related to infusion. Infusion is not the same as injection so I thought infusion is not related to jaw issues.
no nothing to do with the infusion I needed ot out before then but been told I can't have any extractions or invasive work done on my teeth for 3 months so got to wait till November.
Ok I hope you feel better.
Thank you , I wouldn't have known anything about all this and wouldn't have known all the trouble I would have just to have a tooth out it's all new to me with this drug but I had to have it but couldn't tolerate the tablet so had no choice really with infusion because of my bone health, and suffering with bad anxiety hasent helped and googling definitely hasn't helped but just hope it does its job and helps me .
which infusion medicine do you take
Its zoledronic acid and its once a year the tablet form side effects sounded quite horrendous so I wasn't taking that, have a blood test in a couple of months I gather it's to see how it's working but they haven't said anything about a bone scan again to see if bones are any better for it perhaps they can tell from a blood test .
Hello there I'm back with tooth trouble again,I've had root canal work done on a tooth to try and save it and have to go back for the 2nd appointment for permanent filling put in but my dentist insists I don't need numbing for this, I have cancelled it twice now because I'm so scared of having work done without injection but due to go again next week, would anyone know or heard of not being numbed up for 2nd appointment for root canal? I really need to have the tooth out but it will interfere with my next infusion, he said he would give injection if he thought I needed it just so worried about having drilling without being numbed and can't keep cancelling it xx
