I've never come across that link before, so have learned something new. I have low blood pressure!

A one-off reading isn’t indicative of anything.

You could have just been busy, are stressed or had a hot drink!

You need to take your blood pressure at different times of the day, following the instructions and when you are relaxed and also check both arms- not just one.

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toDianeG52

I did both arms first, my right arm was 144/66=65bpm,my left arm was 146/65=62 my next 2 left arm was 143/62=60 140/63=57,only thing I did beforehand was a shower 1 hour before. this explains the breathless I have when going for my daily walk, I have never had high b/p in my life, till I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis.

No connection I’m sure but a hot shower would affect it most likely.

Your top number is barely borderline. Lower number is completely normal.

CDreamer profile image

GP’s usually ask you to take 3 readings a day - morning, noon and night - to sit for 10 minutes prior to taking BP and take 3 consecutive readings at same time for 7 days if at all concerned and then to look at the graph. Health apps and BP machines help you to do this. It’s an average over time which is important, one off readings are not indicative as BP varies constantly over the day.

I also suffer very low, symptomatic BP so I cannot see the connection with osteoporosis but we live and learn. Could you provide a link to the data please?

Well if my blood pressure is ok,what's causing my breathless when I go for my daily walk, it must be my severe osteoporosis.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

You say you have been diagnosed with angina. Breathlessness is one of the symptoms.

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toKaarina

they thought I had anjina not long ago, I had a echocardiogram and I was ok.

CDreamer profile image
CDreamer in reply toRadars

See Kaarina’s reply - Angina most likely. I have arrythmias and have SOB - there are numerous reasons to get breathless and most people over a certain age will find they get breathless on exertion - most likely causes - respiratory problems or cardiac.

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toCDreamer

not long ago the gp thought I had anjina was put on all the meds, went for echocardiogram and I was ok,I think it is my severe osteoporosis, I also have hiatus hernia.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

Perhaps you should remove this information regarding being diagnosed with Angina from your Bio if this is not the case.

I have a gp appointment on Wed so will know more then, hopefully, different gps say different things don't know whether coming or going.

I was just about to ask if you had high blood pressure before you were told you had severe osteoporosis. Could it be that it has come as a terrible shock to you and you have been left ‘hanging’ over the Christmas period without any answers?

When I take my blood I sit down comfortably, I read a book, don’t speak to anyone while I’m doing it. I take a reading, wait five minutes, take another reading wait five minutes, then another reading. I sit and read quietly while I’m doing that. Then I add the three readings together and divide by three to get an average. I then give my readings to my GP - if I don’t do that my by is sky high, when I do it like that it’s well within normal limits.

Have a look at this and see if this is how you are taking your readings bloodpressureuk.org/your-bl...

Don’t talk to anyone while you’re doing it though. Maybe your doctor could fit you up with a 24 hour monitor for you to wear during the day to see what is happening. Good luck when you see your doctor on Wednesday. No chance of gett8ng an earlier appointment?

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toFruitandnutcase

no chance lucky to get this appointment, it must be my severe osteoporosis that's causing my breathless just after starting my daily walk.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toRadars

only two more days but it’s been a long worrying time for you. Hopefully the doctor will be able to sort you out. In the meantime if you get chest pains you know you can go to A&E.

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toFruitandnutcase

been to gp blood pressure ok,he examined me I'm ok don't know why I'm a bit breathless when going for my daily walk, but gave me a form to go for a chest x-ray, is it worthwhile me having a zoledronic acid infusion if not having any testosterone caused my osteoporosis, due to prostate cancer.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

That is good news that your BP readings are ok. One thing less for you to get stressed about. We did say that the one reading you took was not high. Your doctor is on the case about your breathlessness when walking and sending you for an xray.

You say you have prostrate cancer , which I do not remember you mentioning before, and I am sorry to hear this. I would suggest that you speak to someone that you have previously been seeing about this. You are not giving us a complete picture of what problems you do have. We are not qualified to recommend what you should do or not do. May be call the ROS free helpline. I feel you desperately need to talk to someone rather than posting about your health conditions and worries in short bursts, but not giving away any real information for us to try to assist you.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toRadars

Good that you are going for a chest X-ray, that will put your mind a treat a bit. I have no knowledge of cancers and zolendronic acid so it would be best for you to call the ROS helpline tomorrow and speak to someone about the infusion. I’m sure they will be able to answer all of your questions.

tried to get in touch with them today but no answer same yesterday.

Oh dear, that is a nuisance. You could always send them an email - I have done that before. It took a while for them to get back to me but if you explain you could maybe give them your phone number to contact you.

I do not consider a BP reading of 140/63 to be high.

Hypotension = low BP,

Hypertension = high BP.

SusanEleven profile image
SusanEleven in reply toKaarina

Nor do I. I was just at the cardiologist a few weeks ago and my BP was 140/77 and they were quite happy with that.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toSusanEleven

If I had that reading every time I took my own or had my BP taken I would be more than happy! :) I need to take 4 days of BP readings in tomorrow for my yearly check up at the surgery. Today I have had readings of 182/80, 174/82 and 106/52! Four days ago I had a reading of only 104/48!

SusanEleven profile image
SusanEleven in reply toKaarina

Maybe the stress of your upcoming checkup? Stress sends mine up fast. A few weeks ago I was at an urgent care for a sinus infection and it was so stressful my BP was 186/95. The nurse practitioner had me wait after the exam to calm down and my BP reduced before she’d let me go.

DianeG52 profile image

osteo doesn’t affect blood pressure but maybe stressing about it can. Sounds more like your body was still warm and buzzy from the shower too.

The research suggests that women with high blood pressure may be more likely to develop osteoporosis.

Seasid profile image

I would be more concerned with the difference.

140 -63 = 80

You could have a licking heart valve

I always have around 140 systolic blood pressure and I am very happy with that, but I would not be happy with licking heart valve.

Could you please check out your heart by a heart doctor? (Cardiologist)

CDreamer profile image

NB: This is a study on animals to look at mechanisms between the link of high BP and osteoporosis - interesting reading if you follow science but I wouldn’t set any store by it because what I read into the findings was that Hypertension could indicate a heart/circulation issue - I do hope we would all know that anyway.

Doctor’s are now taking much more note of the difference between the systolic (high number) and the dystolic (lower number) which is called various names - pulse pressure is the easiest to remember.

As Seasid mentioned - I would also be more concerned about the pulse pressure difference as it MAY indicate a heart issue - but it could also be hot shower so until you have a graph of readings over days/weeks it would be inconclusive.

Our bodies are very intricate organisms and everything is linked to everything else.

Hypertension is a common disease affecting almost one half of adults and is a major cause of morbiditiy and mortality. Substantial epidemiological data suggest that there is a relationship between hypertension and osteoporosis although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. It is now clear that inflammation and immune activation contribute to the end-organ damage that occurs in hypertension, and that factors in the hypertensive environment, including increased sympathetic outflow, cytokines, angiotensin II, oxidative stress and vascular disease can affect bone metabolism and the balance between bone generation and resorption. Many of these events likely contribute to osteoporosis. In this review we will consider these factors and discuss potential diagnostic and therapeutic measures that might be implemented to improve these diseases.

hi,

I am not aware of osteoporosis causing high blood pressure nor breathlessness.BUT I had a similar experience, couldn’t walk upstairs without gasping for breath….. so had all the hospital checks and X-rays…..but nothing showed up. Then I was researching the effects of osteoporosis medication and low and behold some medication causes the blood vessels in your lungs to break causing bouts of breathlessness and raised blood pressure . I was taking AA but it was some 4 months after I had stopped taking AA. However, the AA can stay in your body for 12 months…..it is now another 4 months on and my blood pressure is back to normal and the breathlessness has improved.

Not sure if this helps or is applicable to you personally, but sometimes these meds that are dished out can have strange after effects. Hope you feel better soon .

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toSowen59

yeah thanks if it's not my severe osteoporosis, it could be my hiatus hernia, but if you Google and osteoporosis it's linked.

lgd333 profile image

140/63 is not high. I am hypertensive and on blood pressure medication. I also have osteoporosis and take Risedronate Sodium. This does not cause breathlessness. I have a hiatus hernia and take lansoprazole. Again this does not cause breathlessness or blood pressure problems.

I went for a chest x-ray last Thursday just wait for results, waiting to start zoledronic acid.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

Hope you get a favourable result and soon. It would be good for you to find out why you get breathless when out walking. It would be a good idea for you to find all you can about zolendronic acid before you commit. There is information about it on this forum and also on the ROS website. theros.org.uk/information-a...

thanks, but for severe osteoporosis, I will have to have it,the endocrinologist said to gp to arrange for me to have zoledronic acid/denosumab, I have an appointment on the 7th Feb with endocrine clinic, I have been reading about people having zoledronic acid infusion, it's like anything some get side effects some don't,there is a lot of people say no problem, if you take notice of some of the horror stories nobody would have anything done.

Have you been diagnosed with OP for quite a time or has this been found out fairly recently after having a DEXA scan? Would you be ok with letting us know your results?

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toKaarina

probably had it a long time, but just recently been diagnosed. -2.5.the bmd femoral neck is 0.593.vfa shows superior end-plate deformity at t12 suspicious for an insufficiency fracture.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

The only number I see there that I understand is -2.5 so I do not really understand what your results were from your latest DEXA to give you a diagnosis of "severe osteoporosis".

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toKaarina

the lowest total t score is -4.1measured at the lumbar spine.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

OK - what were your other T scores which were not as bad as the T score you mention?

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toKaarina

Only other t score is t 12

just received text from gp to say my chest x-ray was normal that's good, but there must be something that is causing breathless when I go for my daily walk.

Kaarina profile image
Kaarina in reply toRadars

That is good but as you say there must be a reason for your breathless when taking exercise.

I’m 62, have far worse osteoporosis readings than yours and I’d be very happy if my blood pressure was as low as yours! I’m on Ramipril, amlopodine and atenolol and even then my blood pressure is still too high. My GP is trying to get the upper number actually down to 140 even with all of these medications already. So I’m not sure there is much for you to worry about?

I haven’t heard of any correlation between osteoporosis and breathlessness.

Radars profile image
Radars in reply toTimothy0172

are you on any osteoporosis meds if yours is bad.

Timothy0172 profile image
Timothy0172 in reply toRadars

yes. Denosumab. I went a diagnosis privately and was prescribed it, then swapped to the NHS for the treatment and saw an NHS consultant who, when I entered the room said ‘Your bones are really terrible’ before saying even ‘hello’. She would have put me on daily injections if it had been her seeing me originally. That was 3 years ago and I should have seen her again now but I imagine Covid put pay to that. I’ll wait another few months and then ask the GP what’s happening with that next appointment to see if I need to go up to daily injections.
