best pain meds for severe osteoporosis
I would suggest you get in touch with your doctor about being prescribed pain meds for your painful back. They have your records so will be aware of what other medical problems you have.
also try your rheumatologist or ask to be referred to a pain management specialist (I’ve just seen one privately and it was amazing so much better than the nhs pain side no nasty opioids for me 🥳).
Have you tried using a heated pad or hot water bottle? Heat can be very soothing for back pain and, for many people, is as effective as painkillers.
Have you had spinal fractures or is your pain caused by something else like disc problems or arthritis? Have you been told to avoid bending your spine forwards and shown how to lift safely? I get regular back pain, but it isn't caused by osteoporosis. I've had it for about 25 years, since slipping a disc, but these days it's only a mild inconvenience so long as I'm careful with lifting, avoid forward bending and limit twisting. You should definitely never bend and twist at the same time. If your back pain comes and goes, it may be that medication isn't the answer, but if it is needed, there are a number of different options which you can discuss with your GP, as well as referral to a pain clinic and physiotherapy.
If it's nerve pain then I use pregabalin - if not, I use tramadol and occasionally co-codamol. I also have gastro issues but these are fine for me
I went through a gamut of pain meds before they finally found my 6 vertebral #s and would give me sufficient meds . You really need a diagnosis of what is causing the pain, #s, disc prolapse, arthritis, muscle spasms etc. Nag doc to get what you need, only you can feel your pain.😱
Finally I got Fentanyl patches, top up with Tramadol, Baclofen for muscle spasms so can have one before standing 10 mins for shower 2x week.Still only takes worst away and I am crippled unable to stand walk for more than few mins but better than before when lost 3 stone re side effects of too high dose Fentanyl.Weaned myself down to smallest dose to cope, but think probably arthritis set in too now. Hotbot or heat pad on back also, helps spasms.👍
Hope you find what works for you.Best wishes X 🤞
