Oops hurt the Foot

Good 11.34 pm everyone...I posted on here a week or so ago about having hurt my hip. Never guess what happened today. Went over on my foot twice, once almost falling down iron staircase in train station then again when I was just about near my local lidl which is a 5 minute walk from my home.

What is funny is that it's on the same side as my sore hip. Only thing I can think of is that I am not walking properly on my hip which has not helped with my balance. Its a good job my fella and colleague was there with me.

I cant stand to put any weight on my foot. Its actually the side of my foot (little toe side). Its swollen, I can hardly bend my toes or my foot. I feel foolish about going to hospital for yet another xray. Waiting time last week, was horrendous. Plus I cant afford to go until Monday. I have other serious health conditions so I am currently unable to work.

Any suggestions xx

Hi Alley I think you are probably right about your balance. You are are most likely and inadvertently protecting your hip so your balance is affected. I broke 3 bones on the top of my foot a few years ago after fainting which led to a Dexa scan and medication etc. An initial X-ray only showed bruising. After persisting and getting another X-ray weeks later and discovering the breaks it was too late to have a plaster or to do anything! The positive I took from this is that I had been wearing a pair of sturdy trainers throughout this period and so my foot was secure and healed really well. A break of my little toe last year was strapped up and healed itself. So I expect your foot will heal itself. Elevate your foot as much as possible, use an ice pack, use a compression bandage for a few days. RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevate. Then use a supporting shoe when walking.

The advantage of getting an X-ray confirms any broken bones which can be helpful information for the future. Have you got a minor injuries unit nearby? That can be a quicker way to be seen than A&E. Good luck.

Sorry to hear of your accident. I do think you should at least get an x ray. I broke my ankle in two places last may. You would know if you had done that, but you may have had a bad sprain or damaged a bone in you foot. Best to get it checked out tho I understand your reluctance. Good luck.

I think it is wise to get an x-ray. I rolled my foot years ago and it swelled up and I couldn’t move my toes or bear weight. I had fractured my fifth metatarsal. I had to wear a walking boot for 9 weeks along with periods of rest, elevation and ice. Overall, it took about 6 months to fully heal to where I could wear shoes other than sneakers.

Even if you haven’t fractured the bone, you probably at minimum have soft tissue damage along with bone bruising which still would require some healing time in a walking boot. You might even be given a rolling cart (the kind where the knee of your hurt leg kneels onto a padded seat as you roll along) since you already have a hip injury and balance issues.

So sorry this has happened to you. Don’t be a martyr - please seek medical guidance. Waiting will only cause issues if things don’t heal properly. I prefer to see a doctor in Sports Medicine for these types of injuries as their focus is geared to getting one back to optimal movement. If I had stuck with the awful “shoe” my ER had provided me, I never would have regained full use. The walking boot along with a proper shoe on the other foot (to match the height the walking boot added - most folks limp along unknowingly) ensured my gait wouldn’t put stress on other areas (hips, knees, back) while I healed.

Best of luck!
