Just learned I have osteoporosis. Does anyone know if algaecal and strontium really does work? Don’t want to take prescription drugs.

This is what I did. Note that I took neither strontium nor algaecal so that doesn't answer your question, but does at least let you know they aren't necessary if you are going the non-prescription route:

Thanks so much for the good information. My doctor was no help just had her nurse call me after the bone density test and tell me she was calling in fosamax for me to start taking. I took one pill and started reading about all the bad side affects decided it’s not for me. Wasn’t sure what to do besides exercise.

I know what you mean. There is so much we ought to be told much earlier in our lives so we don't get to a place where we are told we must take these medications! Good luck!

I read that strontium citrate replaces calcium in bone which makes it appear denser because strontium molecules are larger than calcium. But it's not certain that this actually improves bone strength. It may possibly give a false impression of improvement. It seems that if you take it then you might have to take this into account at next DEXA scan as comparison results might not reliably reflect actual bone density improvement.

I'm not clear what type of strontium you mean though.

Thank you. It was strontium citrate. They make it sound good but from what you say it might not be a good ideal to take.

Strontium is heavier than calcium and it replaces calcium in the bones. It is a micronutrient in our food and maybe that is where it should stay? Like silica, you'll get it from various plant foods , and it will contribute to our bone density and strength, but it's not an essential mineral in the way calcium and magnesium are.

My dr weren’t helpful either. Fortunately I’m retired and now have time to figure this out! Wish I had done my research 3 years ago when my T scores were both -1.8.
