Just did a DEXA although different machine. Reading has improved in FOUR months (with loads of interventions including one shot of Prolia which I will discontinue) from average -3.2 (worst reading -3.7) to -1.7 (worst reading -2.2) in spine!! I will discontinue Prolia and continue everything else

Magnesium spray

Vit A through apricots unsulphered

Sesame or Tahini

Vit k2 mkt7 from Natto

Probiotics

Omega 3

AlgaeCal

Vit d (mostly from sun)

Exercise

And and and

I’m in shock and will go back to same machine to confirm but it can’t be THAT off

Have you been taking the Algaecal strontium? If so, that would explain the improved bone density, and hopefully along with it, improved bone strength.

Hi. No I haven’t. I read in a report that it shows increased bone density which is misleading and strontium is in layman terms not a good idea.

That's one hell of a jump!!

You must be overwhelmed with the news.

I have to admit though I find it so hard to believe there is such a reversal.

I do not mean to sound negative but if this is true then I want some!!

When will your next Scan be??

It will be interesting to know what your results will be.

A couple of points are that people have found a good increase when having treatment with Prolia (I like you have only had one injection and will not be having more) although how long they were on the treatment is something I do not know.

The other point is I see you have included bone broth in your diet.

Can I please ask how often you include it, as I have read that this is The way forward.

I have tried this myself but would love to find a more palatable recipie.

WELL DONE!!

So am going to get a DEXA six months after first skipped dosage which would have been in October so a Dexa in April to confirm.

Because one scary doctor really told me off for wanting to go off meds. But that was a day before my scan and she almost scared me into submission. However I want to rule out Prolia’s role in my improvement.

That sounds a really good way to go about it.

I myself have an appointment next week and know for sure they will be trying to frighten me to stay on it,but my mind is made up and no amount of pressure will change it!

Good luck and we will all want to know what happens from your next scan.

that is amazing! My dr keeps calling me about the Prolia shot and - i feel - trying to scare me with my results which I have posted previously... I had thought about getting another DEXA scan with a different provider, but then i guess I would be in the same boat with using different machines over the past years... :-(

best news of the day!!!

is the magnesium spray internal or external? I'm taking a magnesium b6 capsule.

Just wondering if it is better absorbed when you spray it on the body?

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to judej

According to one book yes. Absorbed better as spray

How long after prolia did you have Dexa scan? I was told to wait 2 years.

That is a fantastic result! Where do you source the natto? I gather that is K2?

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to Siamang

Just checked. It’s Solgar (the brand)

I have to share everything I took. I’ve missed a few things. And AlgaeCal I started only two weeks ago so don’t give it too much credit. Let me find a moment at home to jot down everything.

Magnesium I used spray and used externally and massaged in religiously once a day.

K2 MKT7 from Natto was from a healthstore. The dark brown glass bottle brand that’s very popular. I’ll take a pic and post as I can’t post pics here.

I’m overwhelmed and a bit skeptical but will post my whole progress from 2008 for u all to judge.

Bone broth every two days except when I was travelling for work so on average two times a week.

Prolia was taken April 28 and scan was 21 August.

Siamang profile image

Interesting as scan would have been 4mths post prolia which I was told the Peak for a prolia injection. So may have influenced result??

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to Siamang

Yes it may have. But Prolia doesn’t peak at 13 or 17 percent.

Good news.

But be very carefull with stopping Prolia - consult your doctor, second opinion etc. Im not a doctor but i have been reading a lot and consulted few of them (Similar situation to yours - big jump after first Prolia shot).

By stopping Prolia without taking any other medication you may loose most of the gain you achieved.

They say there are no reports of multiple vertebral fractures due to stopping Prolia after one shot. But your gain is very unusual and it might put you at risk.

I do not mean to sound skeptical. Just be cardfull and double-check with your doctors.

I’ve been reading several studies and the average change in BMD after first injection is not significant in any. At the most the outlier is at 3 percent.

Please give any references of such studies. Thanks

What was your result?

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to osteoz

In fact another study from Mass Gen hospital tried to increase BMD results by giving two drugs Prolia and Forteo and were very pleased w results which after one year were all under 10 percent.

“We found that giving both of these drugs together increased bone mineral density more than treatment with just one drug and more than has been reported for any currently available therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis," says Benjamin Leder, MD, of the MGH Endocrine Unit, corresponding author of the Lancet report. "This is particularly important since previous attempts to combine teriparatide with bisphosphonate drugs like Fosamax did not show any additional improvement."

They enrolled 100 postmenopausal women determined to be at high fracture risk, based on their bone density and other risk factors, who were randomly divided into three groups.

Over the 12-month study period, one group received a subcutaneous 60 mg dose of denosumab every six months, another group self-administered daily 20-microgram injections of teriparatide, and the third received both drugs at the same dosage schedules. ...

Participants receiving treatment with both drugs had significantly better results than those receiving just one at several measured sites. For example, bone density measured at the lumbar spine increased 6.2 percent with teriparatide alone and 5.5 percent with denosumab, but combination treatment resulted in a 9.1 percent increase. Similar bone density improvements were seen at the hip.”

The best article i found about stopping Prolia is this one

researchgate.net/publicatio...

I gained ~10% after the first shot.

Your gain is very unusual for sure. What I'm trying to say is that having such an exceptional gain put you at unknown zone, because there are no similar cases.

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to osteoz

Three points though

1 The study looks at discontinued usage after four injections

2 Claims bone loss takes you back to baseline after one year thereafter

3 BMD again after TEN YEARS “is continuous over 10 years, reaching 21.7% on thelumbar spine and 9.0% on the femoral neck [2].”

So the study doesn’t explain my gain. I had one injection but completely changed my diet n exercise routine.

osteoz profile image
osteoz in reply to Busymommy

I also changed my diet and exercise routine when diagnosed, but it did not change my DEXA score. So in my case it is the Prolia that caused the gain.

Your case might be different.

Good luck, and please update when you have new DEXA results.

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to osteoz

So you changed your diet and exercise routine, got tested, found no change, went back to normal, then took Prolia, then got tested, and found a ten percent increase in bone density?

What were the dietary changes?

Btw I highly recommend “the healthy bones” by Laura and Helen Kelly because it identified exactly what nutrients from which foods.

osteoz profile image
osteoz in reply to Busymommy

I contineud with the diet and exercise routine while taking Prolia.

A proper amount of calcium and magnesium in food, vitamines d3 and k2. Fast walking at least an hour every day, 2-3 times a week weights. I'm 52, with vertebral fractures.

I decided to continue with Prolia till gaining enough bone density, then stop with it using the procedure suggested in the article which i brought above.

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to osteoz

Makes sense. All the best and keep us posted x

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to osteoz

I also think if you were just in Prolia and had a ten percent hike then that’s completely unexpected and very impressive. How old are you?

In my case I know the impact of several nutrients could have been compounded - possibly even with Prolia, because there is never one thing alone that can make such a difference. Not even a single drug because that drug would be off the shelves selling so fast.

I had 1st dexa scan 2 years ago. Bad t scores. Had one a week ago and scores improved. unbelievable as only been taking medication for 6 months. Had to have scan on different machine as moved house. I do not believe result. Osteoporosis society says you can have a dexa scan at same hospital in 2 different machines and get different results. How can you know if medication is working if you can't rely on scans.

Busymommy profile image
Busymommy in reply to VMMS

Good point. The machine that showed improvement is the same machine I did a dexa on in 2015 which showed osteoporosis then also. Improvement since then too. But yes. Apples to oranges with the four month comparison.
