If your mum has osteoporosis and you fractured your ankle this February and saw your doctor or went to A&E because of the fracture, you should have been referred for a DEXA scan. Why not give the NOS helpline a call and speak with one of the nurses. Their number is 0808 800 0035 (freefone).

Thank you. They didn't mention it because the subject never really came up. Yes I will give them a call thanks.

I think it could be useful to speak to the NOS nurses as Kaarina suggests. Whether or not you want to be checked out by your GP for osteoporosis may depend partly on your attitude to medication if a DEXA scan shows that you have a low T-score. There are plenty of things you can do to lower your risk of further fracture, via diet, exercise and supplements. Having said that, the level of exercise possible may need to be modified according to your T-score, so it could be helpful to know that.

Thanks for your advice. It's good to know what's out there and who I can ask. It will also be good for me to know whether I have osteoporosis or not as knowledge is power.

Hi yes I think you should see you GP and ask about a DEXA scan. When I fell and fractured my hip the hospital took a family history and definitely recommended a scan. Good luck

When I broke my ankle it was within the following year when my own doctor referred me for a dexa scan when I was out of plaster for a few months.
