Hi Susan-J

Is this link any help to you? nos.org.uk/about-osteoporos...

Hi Kaarina, I was going to follow this post because it is of interest to me. Thank you for the link, it is very helpful.

Thank you Kaarina, I’m trying to find a recent report that has been published that addresses the issue of using HRT as an alternative treatment for osteoporosis. I think it may have been published by a women’s health organisation but I so far I haven’t been able to find it.

You may want to scroll down to Types of HRT available and view summary. Not everyone is suitable for HRT dependant on their medical history and their risk factor to breast cancer. Its something that should be discussed with a specialist in rheumatology by referral though the NHS system in uK, but of course things may vary from country to country.

It is well worth reading the entire content on the link that Kaarina has provided.

Thank you for such a helpful reply, I think it was the women’s health concern that my osteoporosis consultant referred to. I did read the NOS article but I wanted the latest up to date information about HRT and the use of it in treating osteoporosis. I’ll have a look at the link you gave me.

Thanks again.

not for long term use apparently, but ok if you are going through the menopause and your doc thinks benefits outweigh the risks.

Thank you, my consultant was enthusiastic about using HRT instead of other osteoporosis medication for me. She said there is strong evidence to show that HRT can help restore bone density. I’ll continue to do some more research before I see her again in April 2018 so that I can make an informed decision.

I am North London-based. Can anyone recommend a really good consultant specialising in osteoporosis?

I can't have HRT as I've had Oestrogen positive breast cancer

I have taken HRT for the last 5 years, together with Protelos, my bone density increased some, when my GP stopped my HRT last year, all my menopause symptoms came back, together with backache and MRI showed the worse results, so I’m back to my HRT again, only this time I got bioidentical HRT through the specialist. I do believe that HRT do help treat osteoporosis, may slowly as I only take small amount each day. But it is a risk of breast cancers, so need weight it and consult the specialist to have the hormones tests.

Thanks for your helpful reply, do you mind telling me how old you are? I’m 57 and never considered HRT before but I am reluctant to take any of the osteoporosis drugs currently available. I have Osteoporosis in my hips, neck and spine, my spine is a T score of -4.5 so together with exercise and nutrition I’m looking for an alternative way to increase my bone density.

I’m 58 now. T score was -3.7 for my spine, increased to -2.8 after HRT and Protelos.

Hi hollybone,

Out of interest, are you still able to access Protelos since it was withdrawn in August 2017?

My GP stoped me last August. So no protelos now. So I’m having a protelos holiday break and think of some replacement later.

Thank you for replying. I was offered Prolia when Protelos was withdrawn. I saw the doctor 6 months later that I see for my osteoporosis and I had already decided against it due to the possible side effect of joint pain. I get enough of that daily anyway due to osteoarthritis so am not prepared to take the risk. The doctor (whom I see for my osteoporosis twice a year) was in agreement with me not going down that route although it was he that suggested it.

I am pondering if to take strontium citrate, ordering it on line.

That is what I am thinking about too. I will see my next scan result .

My mum had osteoporosis, and I went for a scan last year. I was told I had it,which didn’t surprise me,as having a family history, plus the fact I’ve taken steroids every day for the past 15 years for a lung condition. However the radiologist failed to do my hips. It was done privately, so when an appointment came through from the nhs, I went along and had another one done. I now find the hospital mixed my results with someone else’s and all I’ve got is osteopenia in one hip. I’m sure this is down to the hrt I’ve been on for the last 15 years. I’m so glad I’m on it. I think with all the steroids, there was no way I could avoid it, but I have. Best of luck to you , whatever decision you take .

It depends on your age. The older you are the greater the risks when taking HRT for bone density and at a certain point the risks (stroke, heart disease) outweigh the benefits. If you are younger, by all means it seems like an interesting option.

Thank you for the link, it’s such a difficult decision to know what to do. I’ve made the decision not to to take the any osteoporosis medication because of the possible side effects and the confusion about their effectiveness. HRT is appealing but it too comes with all sorts of possible unwanted side effects at the same time as many benefits. I’ve got a few more months to keep researching before I have to make the decision!

Hi Susan like you newly diagnosed with op and decided to live through it without meds,I am more uncomfortable about the side effects and how it can take over your life to having all the facts about osteoporosis, making sure we know what to eat,the best excise and to monitor our condition.

Thank you for your positive reply, it’s such a difficult decision not to take the medication but at the end of the day you have to do what feels right for you. Good luck x
