The only way you have a chance of avoiding statins, if it’s at all possible to avoid them at all, is to lose weight, eat well and be active.
You owe yourself this at a minimum and yeah, I know, it’s not as simple as saying it is. Speak to your doctor about what help you can have with one of the new drugs. Do whatever you can to be healthy.
The fluoxetine may have contributed to some weight gain just through it slowing your heart beat down. I know I’m experiencing this with the drugs I’m on. I’m not on this one though. Only about 6 kilos over weight but I eat perfectly, and really can’t do any better. Exercise is hard as I have a heart condition and so I’m going to speak to my doctor today about alternatives. I don’t want to put any more pressure on my BP or heart by holding or gaining weight.
Thank you Forensic Fairy your reply is much appreciated! Have an appt booked with my GP so will ask all the questions. Although they have offered me weight loss tablets and not sure about those either?!?!My eating habits are terrible 😫
Trying to eat more vegetables and hope to grow my own to inspire moving and being outside.
I spoke to my doctor yesterday and she said that she has cardiac specialists asking her to prescribe weight loss drugs for their patients so she strongly believes they’re safe. She has written to my cardiologist to ask for his advice with me specifically as we all have different risk factors. I’m actually very keen to try them as my weight gain is affecting me and it’s dangerous to my health.
I also grow some of my own veges - first time I’ve tried this! I’m waiting on my carrots and capsicum to be ready but have already harvested lettuce, basil and thyme. I had so much basil I had to make some pesto to use it all - that was a first too.
No side effects particularly however I was dx with high cholesterol at 8.3 in my early 50s & said yes immediately to statins as I was not over weight at under 9 stone and extremely healthy diet (my stomach has never been able to tolerate any fat) and swam 25 lengths before work. I new both maternal grandparents had died of stroke in the '60s. Fast forward my mum had a stroke and my older sis had a massive stroke 3 years ago, she's confined to wheelchair, bed and carers thrice daily plus her 79 yr old husband so I'm still not taking any chances. Sis was very active, great diet & 8.5 stone - she'd refused the prescribed statins! It's important to get the bad cholesterol down. It's also helpful to know if your good cholesterol is at a good level. Not simple I know but do speak to your gp asap
PS I was on fluoxetine (prozac) years ago, it to quite a while to wean off it safely
