Bp meds and palpitations

has anyone experienced palpitations with their Bp meds? My doc has suggested they are linked to anxiety/perimenopause but they have started since starting Losartan. I’m on 12.5mg recently reduced from 25mg

the way that people react to medication does vary from person to person, so you are asking a very small population (that is, those posters on this site who might be on the same medication as you). Whereas the details on your pack as to what side effects you might get are from a much larger population. We don’t know much about you, im989, whereas your doctor does.

If I replied to you “yes I’m on this medication and no I didn’t have palpitations “ or “yes I’m on this medication and I do have palpitations “ you are no better off. Palpitations can be due to many things.

With all due respect, this person is asking for support from people who have experience of taking Losartan. This is a support forum where people should be able to share their experiences and ideas about managing their blood pressure.

I have received better advice from people on this forum than my GP. People who are actually using these drugs have real experience to offer, which is invaluable. Anyone can read a package insert which is the extent of most GPs knowledge on BP medication!

I agree with you figster that this is so - but in my opinion not necessarily when we are discussing specific medications as we know nothing of the poster’s medical or family history etc etc etc. I personally think we’re are edging on to dodgy territory if we do.

I think by posting I was just looking for reassurance that some others had experience similar. When feeling anxious and trying to work out, from quite a long list, what might be causing palpitations it is useful to know if others had the same. My understanding of a forum like this is that it’s a place to share notes. Certainly not using it for medical diagnosis. More solidarity

I agree im989 . Sometimes I think of forums as a bit like discussions in a Dr's waiting room. In a similar way you may accept or find reassurance from what others say in response to your query or you may not but you have asked because you are interested to know about other people's experience. You can then make your own mind up but you will hopefully have more information to help you. Surely that's one of the benefits of forums like these? This BP community actually has the word 'support' in the title!

I’m sorry but we will need to agree to differ. I think it is completely appropriate to share experiences of specific medications. I see nothing remotely worrying or dodgy about it. We are all adults and can take or leave the advice we receive on this forum. We are not forced to reply if we have nothing to offer the poster.

This space is absolutely designed for people asking these kinds of questions. So I would encourage you to keep asking. Most people on here are more than happy to share their experiences. It can feel lonely when you first start with BP issues and this is a support forum.

In my opinion you know your body better than anybody and if you think there is a link then there probably is. I have read that palpitations can be a side effect of this class of drugs. Some people have them and some don’t. I recently started Olmesartan and had some nasty side effects. Other people on this forum have been fine with it. Our bodies are unique and what suits one person won’t suit another.

And of course add menopause into the mix and it’s a perfect storm! If I were you I would go back to the GP and ask to try something else.

I’m hoping that other people taking Losartan will add their thoughts to this.

Hi im989, I'm not on the same medication as you so can't comment directly but I did have terrible problems initially with palpitations when first on bp meds.I hope it settles for you as it did for me.

I also had alarming ectopic heart beats when I first started my BP meds but weeks later they settled down to seldom and mild occurrences, good luck.

Hi im989,

I take losartan 25mg and have done so for three years now. I did experience both anxiety and ectopic beats in the early days but know that not everyone does. Did you experience them when you were taking 25mg, or did they begin after the dose was reduced?

They began after starting the 25mg. I’ve only just started the reduced dose so I’m hopeful they will reduce. We shall see! Thanks for replying

Hi, I was on Losatan last July 2022, two weeks after starting the meds I chest pains. Stopped the meds pain continued for 2/3 weeks I get a funny feeling in my chest now and again. Also my heart beat drops below 50bpm while asleep for 10mins by throughout the night I get an alert on my smart watch which I never had in the two years wearing the watch.
