hi all,

does anyone know if lercanidipine is associated with insomnia?

i take 10mg and hate the side effects, i battle on with it as it's the third medication i've tried since 2018, however i find it really hard to sleep and wonder if anyone has had a similar experience

thanks

Bern

i should think it would/anxiety as well its a visious circle same class drugs as amlodipine, is having no sleep anxiety ,bp lower better than having sleep,no anxiety and high bp ,whatever high is lol, you have one life, try a baby aspirin before bed that might help or ditch the pills and just do aspirin if u can, when i use to do my bp aspirin would bring the top number down about 20 within a hour and it helps your anxiety, its up to u what u put in your mouth, what was your bp before pills

thank you, it's a minefield in my opinion!

I sympathise completely. I have tried 4 different medications now and can’t tolerate any of them . I’m sure this is a big problem for a lot of us.

oh lord! i wish there was an alternative, as i am nervous to come off the meds but as Peter99999 says, maybe we have to make choices. it's like a "half life" on this medication!!

thanks for your reply

yes mine was no life,i chose living over death, it was hard because you are worrying whats going to happen, trust me you will be fine, do breathing exercises, walk, eat well, not crap, i still have off days even after nearly 2 years, insomnia, anxiety but nowhere near as bad, never had any before pills, aspirin half a baby dose takes the worry away about heart attack, stroke, so thats the basic gone from you already.

Sleepyholllow in reply topeter999999999

thanks for that, i certainly will have to make some changes!

Hi Sleepyhollow..I'm on 20mg lercanidipine and cannot sleep before 3 -4am!Try as I might I just cannot drop off so you have my complete sympathy. It has to be something to do with the medication but doctors advice seems to be "put up or shut up"..if I stumble upon a solution I shall let you know but after 3 years,I'm at a loss!

Sleepyholllow profile image
Sleepyholllow in reply toMadmollyb

hello madmollyb

yes exactly the same! thought i was going mad, i vary between 10 mg and 20 mg, the higher dose almost flattens me! i feel half alive, there must be a better way, um on my third drug, this one is the best of a bad lot, i'm doing the lifestyle stuff 10,000 steps per day etc, food, nothing seems to work !!

Hi Sleepyholllow,

I have found that Lercanidipine does cause sleep problems, also getting out of bed numerous times to go to the bathroom!! I have found it best to take it in the mornings because of this. My ankles also have a tendency to swell on this drug.

hello charlie460,

thank you for your reply,

I'm at my wits end with these meds, feel like i'm feeling almost worse on them, didn't even know i had high bp till i had a hypertensive episode 4 years ago, can't seem to find a balance, it's a minefield!

peter999999999 profile image

what was your bp before pills, was it a one off 4 years ago, the trouble is now you scared to do anything about it like most are, try to reduce pills slowely taking bp each time to see if it makes a difference, i only lost 2 years of my life living in hell ,you done 4, do you want to do another 4, or more , just because you had a one off spike in bp docs put you on pills instead of trying to find out why, could it just be anxiety sending bp up

Sleepyholllow profile image
Sleepyholllow in reply topeter999999999

dont know, yes it was a one off episode, may have been high for a while, stress work etc, took early retirement during lockdown, am trying lifestyle stuff, diet etc, hopefully i may be able to reduce meds.

I havnt been away in 3 years due to covid so Im looking forward to it. Hopefully i will come back feeling much better and with a better mindset.

I take 10mg Lercanidipine and can’t say I’ve had any side effects. My sleep is pretty much broken every night (worse after a glass of wine and/or a big meal) but I put most of it down to getting older as most people of my age have worse sleep now (I’m 71). As for high BP - it naturally rises with age so I’m not sure why they want seniors to have a BP of 120/80. The most effective way I have found to reduce my BP was to lose 16lbs and to exercise regularly.

hello, thank you for your reply, i suppose some are more sensitive to meds, gp thinks i am super sensitive, my dose varies between 10 and 20 mg if it's stubbornly high, i'm currently on 20 so side effects are brutal! true what you say about older people and higher bp, i'm 62, so should prob relax about it a bit more lol!

Doraflora profile image

your story is interesting, TheJazzSinger. I’ve got to collect a prescription tomorrow for Lercanadipine as the Losartan I was on before, the GP thinks might be the cause of my low serum sodium level (127).

I’m hoping i won’t get any side effects as this will be my fourth attempt with BP meds, but I’m more bothered about if I can have my nightly wine still

TheJazzSinger profile image
TheJazzSinger in reply toDoraflora

It does say not to drink alcohol with Lercanidipine but I checked with my GP who said it's not a problem. However, I do sleep much much better when I don't drink! Alcohol definitely is a sleep disturber!

Sleepyholllow profile image
Sleepyholllow in reply toTheJazzSinger

yes that is for sure, seems like most of life's pleasures are gradually being taken by this horrendous medication!!

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply toTheJazzSinger

well, I found on the H&S site they said not to drink alcohol with Lercanadipine, but on the NHS website it said you can. I also checked this with my pharmacist today and he said “in moderation”.

I’m fed up of trying all these different drugs; all those chemicals inside your body doesn’t seem right, but we don’t have a lot of choice.

Onwards and upwards. At least we’re all still here😊
