Losartan & Muscle aches & Pains in Legs

I have had aching leg muscles and my mobility has been poor. Had loads of tests done by GP and Rheumatology as I have GCA, Arthritis and Osteoporosis. I searched all my meds to see if any listed muscle problems as a side effect and Losartan did so I stopped them almost a week ago. Have taken my blood pressure every day to and its dropped to 134/79 the lowest I have been for a long time and my legs are slowly feeling better. Is this my imagination or has anyone else found aching muscles as a side effect of Losartan please?

It is a known side effect. All medicines can have side effects as I’m sure you already know. With hypertension it’s sometimes a question of try it and see. But, your BP getting lower when you stop? Strange!

However, it’s not recommended to stop BP medication without referral do your doc, particularly as you have an unusual disease (GCA) with which he or she won’t be particularly familiar, probably. So proceed with caution in my view.

Thank you for responding Happy Rosie. I have a telephone appointment with my GP to discuss Losartan with her. Ive only needed BP meds for a couple of months very probably due to high dose steroids which I have now tapered to only 6mg and to having weekly Tocillizumab injections. Im hoping with the readings im getting she is going to agree to me staying off BP tablets. Will search for posts on side effects with interest.

I meant to add to my previous post - you might want to have a look at other posts on the subject of losartan too.

Hi HappyDiamonds,

I have been taking losartan for two years and have never experienced aching muscles or pain. I hope you are able to resolve the issue after speaking to your GP.

Yup Losartan gives you muscle aches. Plus lower leg aching and sometimes ankle itching. Sadly am trapped on it having tried others. Its the best of a bad bunch. If you can manage without it do so. I wish I could.

Thank you I certainly have been experiencing all of that which I don't want or need on top of everything else so I am hoping to be able to keep off them.

Hello Happy Diamonds, I don't take Losartan so can't comment on that. However, you say your BP is lower. Could it be that your GP put you on tabs too quickly and that you had a short-term episode of higher BP which happens to us all?

Im hoping so, it would be really nice to get off even 1 tablet. Still not experiencing muscle aches in my legs and blood pressure is fine so im keeping my fingers crossed.
