Changing medication.

I have been on Amlodipine for 2 months and suffered with lots of side effects. The GP has now stopped it and prescribed Ramipril. How has anyone else got on with Ramipril?

I have been on it since late March. I personally don't like it and I took it several years ago too and had the same feelings about it. The thing is though that no two people are the same and probably will get different effects and some may not get any, especially concerning ones. The best thing to do is to take it and see how you get on with it as that's the most important thing. It would be good though if you could come back and give us your opinion when you have had the chance to try it. Good luck and I hope it works for you. x

I take Ramipril 2.5 with Felodipine 20mg and Doxasosin 8mg. I have no issues with it.

What side effects did you have with Amlodipine? I've been on it for 3 weeks and don't know if what I have is normal.

I was on Amlodipine and it was good for bringing my boys down but it made my acid reflux worse so had to stop it.. same with Ramipril it gave me z bad cough after 5 days am now on Losartan 50mg .. but everyone is different and you might be ok on it you have to give it a try

Thank you. Had exact same symptoms to Amlodipine (acid reflux) and Ramipril (cough) so tried Losartan but that made my dry cough worse (even though it's supposed to help with that). Hope it helps you though. Going to try Felopodine this week despite asking for Isradipidine (as this is one of the only ccbs which doesn't cause acid reflux supposedly). Also, according to the leaflets, acid reflux is not listed as a side effect to Amlodipine and yet if you look up GERD it says one of the causes is calcium channel blockers!

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker while Rampril is an ACE inhibitor. You might want to look up the side effects of these two classes.

I take both....lucky me!My bp was incredibly high when diagnosed so I got both at once.Naturally that came as a bit of a shock to the system so I had a few nasty side effects but since I am on two I never knew which pill caused which effect.Anyway a year on I'm much better...just swollen ankles and a little bit of a burning sensation once in a while.I used to get quite bad burning.Had all the tests and nothing found.Strangely enough no one suggested changing the meds.Anyway a lot better now.

I got swollen ankles when Amlodopine increased from 5 to 10 for a couple of months, so GP cut it back down to 5 mg and added in Bendroflumezide, swelling went away. Several years later BP went up again GP tried me on Ramipril but that gave me a dry cough, so now on Losartan as a third med, absolutely fine on that combination. Everybody is different, GPs seem happy to try different meds to get it right for the individual, and don’t seem to mind that you’ll be in their surgery quite frequently till you are sorted.

I take a low dose of both daily and works perfectly now controlling BP in the 120 range with no side effects. Initially had some itching and hives which passed.

I have gotten hives on medications. How long did the hives take to go away.

Took about 3-4 weeks I recall

I've been on a low dose of Ramipril for a week. I've started to develop short intermittent chest pains which makes me worry. It's listed as one of the side effects but I still phoned my GP to voice my anxiety.

Good for you, what did he say?

in reply to springcross

They said it was 'anxiety', and I accepted that. Afterwards I realised it was indeed Ramipril that was causing it. I've had anxiety for a while and I've never experienced chest pains like this before.

I spoke to a pharmacist and they said chest pains were listed as a side effect. On the patient leaflet too, chest pains were listed as a side effect.

This is unacceptable to me, so after reading reviews for Ramipril on 'Ask A Patient' I decided to stop taking the medication. I will review things with my GP later.

Bearing in mind, a discharge letter from hospital described my blood pressure as being 'not dangerous'.

I also read another article which solidified my opinion, written by someone who used to be a big pharma lobbyist, that exposed the relationship between our doctors and how they're financially rewarded.

I shall continue with weight loss, exercise and a healthy diet. Meditation too maybe.
