Fawley refinery chimney 🖤

They are detonating this chimney on Sunday morning 31 st October at around 7 am ... it's to make way for a super duper complex of houses shopping centres restaurants etc...

They have been working for months on the small A roads widening them putting roundabouts on them and creating havoc with road closures the roads are no better than what they were before...

There is one road in and one road out ...where they plan to build crazy times the area has enough traffic flow and now its going to be even busier ..

The chimney will be on the news the next few days if you have ITV if local it will also be going on you tube

End of an era for sure the chimney has been a landmark for years and brought many people home in the dark ... on giving lost people directions i have always said follow the chimney you can't go wrong 🖤🖤

My nan used to say the saying about chimmines. Would love to see something like that chimney keep missing the old flats going up.

Oh dear all this so called improvement causes untold misery. It’s the same here, road works, house building = chaos. Shame to say farewell to the chimney. We’re familiar with Fawley due to Pete’s dad having worked for BP in Sunbury-on-Thames and his mum going to Fawley to play bowls. The chimney was quite a sight. Xxx💜💕💜💕

Should slow my reading down. At first I read this as "They are donating this chimney" thinking who the heck would want that 😁

Just love predictive reading - gives a whole new dimension to life. Predictive hearing is even better - oh the fun we have with pointless conversations about what TOH said and what I actually heard!

My head does it all the time Ergendl. Hubby turned off the predictive text on my phone but I haven't managed to do the same with my bonce. Don't have the same with conversation, that tends to be "what did you say?". "pardon?" to the point where one of us sometimes says "Oh never mind!". 😅

Ours goes something like:He went to the local branch.

When did he go to France?

No, he went to the branch.

Why? is there a branch in France?

No, he went into town to visit the bank branch...

and so on. Never as funny seeing it written as living in the scene, but provides endless hours of fun.

Aww will tell my dad. He worked at Fawley for a long time until he retired. He was a foreman and led a big team. Dunno 🤷‍♀️ what he did exactly…he’s a plumber so was something to do with huge pipes!

You’re right too, many a time sailing back across the channel we’ve known when we’ve seen that chimney that we’re near the Hamble River and home!

My mother used to work at the Alber’s mill in Seattle. This had several old grain towers and when they were finally to be demolished, the demolition crew saw an elderly gent who set up a camp stool and daily watched their preparations. These old towers were very well built and were giving the crew rather a challenge. Someone chanced to ask this fellow who he was, turned out, he’d long ago helped to build them. It tickled him pink that they didn’t go down easy. Thanks for the memories.

So many new houses being built, yet so many empty buildings which could be converted into homes. It seems such a shame to let these go to waste when it could solve a lot of housing problems. Sorry about the rant have a lovely day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Have to agree with you on this Bernadette, so much land being built on, no room for wild life, no wonder we have climate change x

Who was the gent, who used to be on TV, doing programmes about demolishing chimneys, I could see him when I read this, but his name has gone walk about. Lovely picture.

I'd hate to be nearby- all that dust. Hate to see things come down.

Hate to see every bit of land now being used for housing, my local field has now been taken over for housing, leaving few places for kids to play and dogs to run x
