Can anyone advise on all round pain killers that are safe for a COPD patient, please? Apparently NOT CoCodomol or Ibuprofen...tia...

Generally paracetamol, but patient should check with their doctor regarding symptoms as pain is not generally associated with COPD unless there is a lung infection or pneumonia etc

Thanks Bkin, you'll see I've edited my post now to hopefully make it clear that this refers to pain generally rather than any pain related to COPD. Paracetomol does nothing for me, but maybe it will help my husband who is the COPD patient.

Generally its what is recommended for patients with COPD if its just general pain relief as paracetomol is pretty safe with other medications prescribed generally, but to be sure your husband should check with his doctor who will be aware of his current medication and needs, safe to prescribe for whatever pain your husband is treating should paracetamol not be strong enough for him. Gosh, I have immense constant pain with my COPD

i agree with Bkin you can't beat paracetamol for general all round pain relief.personally even with very severe Emphysema i have never had any problems with ibuprofen as an anti inflammatory for muscle pain etc though take in moderation with regard to gastro problems and Cocodamol just gives me pain relief if required overnight without problems with breathing.

Hi Pippers, I have severe COPD, have had a cancerous lung lobe removed, and am on oxygen 24/7, and the only pain reliever/anti inflammatory I take is ibuprofen. I have been taking 2 or 3 ibuprofen daily with no ill effect for at least 20 years. Suggest you discuss with your Dr and Pharmacist. Best Wishes, judg69

Thank you skischool and judge69; my husband's taken both ibuprofen & Cocodomol in the past but a new pharmacist insists that COPD patients should take neither. I'll take it up with a doctor when my running around in circles results in getting hold of one... meanwhile I've bought paracetamol. Cheers!

Yes good idea Pippers,your new pharmacist isn't going to be treating many copd patients with pain relief in the near future,god only knows where he got that idea from.good luck to hubby.

I am stage 4 emphysema and my GP has prescribed co-codamol

I take co-codamol and the selective receptor NSAID etodolac for arthritic pain following a road accident. I used to take other NSAIDs like brufen but that gave me stomach problems, and naproxen, but that made me come out in bruises all over my body.

Hi sometimes if tablets are a problem , there are varied creams. I use voltarol which is a 1% dose of diclofenac, which is another painkiller that you can also get in tablet form. It is much easier to just pop a pill for pain , if you have time heat pads work too.Good luck with finding what is best for you. Sleep helps lower pain levels , if your tired everything seems twice as bad.

I'm odd, I can't take paracetamol, but I'm fine with ibuprofen. For a healthy person in need of temporary pain killer I'd say trial and error. For us on here I'd say check with your medical team. It's complicated because so many medicines should not be taken together or with certain foods, then our own individual quirks...

Just say I have emphysema and asthma and a lot more at the moment I wear a transdermal patch buprenorphine 20 micro gram an hour 7 days patch 8 a day 30/500mg codeine paracetamol a day and 3 -300mg gabapentin so there is a lot that’s available
