Like everyone else I'm struggling a bit in this hot weather. I have the 6 minute walk test on Wednesday and am worried the heat will really slow me down. Don't know whether to wait and see if it gets cooler or postpone for a while. Would like some advise on this please. Lilian xxxxxx

Hi

Hopefully the premises will be cooler, try and arrive thirty minutes early, give you chance to rest and cool down. Postponing could mean missing the next pulmonary rehablitation session.

I had my course in winter and if it was to slippery there would be a phone call from the centre to cancell.

Whether that applies in heatwaves, not sure. May be a phone call is in order

I called the PR place and they said to come along as there are (more) forms to fill in and they will decide then whether to continue with the walk. She said the people who came today didn't do any exercising, so I will go. Thank you for your help Stone. Lilian xxxxxxx

Hi Lillian the 6 minute walk is obviously to assess you. It dosent matter how slow or fast you are they will take all into consideration for you personally. Iv just finished my 6 weeks and have final assessment on Friday found the whole thing beneficial and loved it but do phone them to get advice if you need to good luck iv been asked to be an advocate for further groups attending PR in my area it's voluntary but looking forward to it xxxx

Thank you Angie. I did phone and they said to go anyway as there are forms to be filled in (can't wait). It might be a bit cooler on Wednesday. You've done really well Angie with your PR, they must be very impressed with you! Lilian xxxxxx

Hi The physios at the classes see people like us every day and are not slave drivers, they will let you exercise at your pace so you do what you can and no more. You can sit out what you can't do but they do like to see how far you can walk at the begining, if it isn't far so be it. They then see how far you can walk at the end of the course and hope to see an improvement.

Please do not fret but do not put it off either, face up to it and get on with it you will not regret it. You will meet people better and worse than you. The groups are friendly and informative you will pick up a lot from the physios and the participants. I've done it three times and enjoyed each course.

Thank you Keith. I am nervously looking forward to it. At least we will all have something in common! I'm supposed to have 'the walk' tomorrow, but I think it will be too hot. Hope you are coping in this heat. Lilian xxxxxxx

Lilian you'll be fine, walk as fast or as slow as you feel able, do not rush it they are not looking for speed just how far you can comfortably walk. It most probably will be indoors on the flat so the heat shouldn't be too bad for you.

Take care

It went fine thank you Keith, the room was cool, (fan), and I could have done more but they stopped it because the oxygen levels dropped. The nurse said I did well, I walked 80 metres. A piece of cake really. Lilian xxxxxx

I am sure they do these tests indoors, and it will be ( or should be) air conditioned, and they will make allowances for the heat anyway. So do go along , you can always stop if you cannot complete the walk, but when I went, there were a lot who were VERY slow at the 6 min walk bit, several with oxygen , and everyone passed. I think they often do the walk, not to pass/or fail you, but to see if you improved over the course of the PR as they do the walk again on the last session. In fact the slower you walk, the more you need the PR I think :) :) so go and enjoy and don't knock yourself out worrying

Thank you Sohara. The hospital where the PR is held is a Victorian building that needs a bit of updating so no air conditioning! From the telephone conversation I had with them, because of the heat, the 'walk' will not be done tomorrow. I wish I could do it tomorrow as I feel so well, better than I have for a long time. I think all the reasons you give for the walk are right. I hope you benefitted from your classes. Love Lilian xxxxxxxxx
