Falling asleep at a drop of a hat

Just coming up to my fourth year since my heart attack and one stent .

Falling asleep in the afternoon is getting worse . It is strange ,l don’t really feel fatigued I can only describe as being really Chilled out and I nod off . I sleep for about ten to fifteen minutes . Recently I had my yearly review with the surgery nurse, all blood tests blood pressure are all good . I did ask about this problem , she just told me it’s probably my age (69) . As I said it is getting worse I am falling asleep in the evenings. I am convinced it is connected to the Beta Blockers I am on . It’s all very strange I attend my local gym and feel no sensation of fatigue . However return home after lunch I nod off to sleep , can anyone tell me if this is normal , perhaps I am getting old

I nodded off regularly at aged 48.

How do you sleep at night?

Also the cold weather tends to not help, your room should Be minimum of 18°c when you are relaxed in a room.

I had open heart surgery last July and I have episodes like that but not feeling so much chilled out but more like I’ve had a shot of morphine and I’ve got absolutely no choice but to sleep , I’m on beta blockers too.

Hi. I'm 71 but have always felt young and active. I am taking 5.mg Bisoprolol which was reduced from 7.5 because of fainting. I tend to nap a couple of times a day and sleep about 9 hours a night. I have decided to embrace it rather than fight it. The most annoying o e is after breakfast when I can't possibly be tired after a good night's sleep so I feel sure it must be bisoprolol and low HR.

Ah but. Your body concentrates on digestion for the first hour or two after a meal. So it’s decided you need to take things easy.

10 to 15 minutes is a "power nap", and very good for you. Some of history's deepest thinkers relied on them. For instance Winston Churchill.

I had my heart attack 5 years ago and I need an afternoon nap every single day. Again, it is only 15 to 20 mins. I am relatively fit and 61 years old.

I do this all the time. I have an LBBB, no meds, no underlying heart disease. If sleeping was an Olympic sport I could bring home a gold medal. An hour or so nap after lunch is a given unless I am going somewhere. I have no problem sleeping at night either, which drives my husband mad as he struggles with his sleep even though he is active during the day and rarely naps. I used to think I was just lazy. When I worked afternoons were hard, but since retiring I just accept that I am a napper and embrace it wholeheartedly.

Like you I began to feel sleepy during the day and unsuccessfully dozed in a chair. Finding this an unsatisfying sleep I have now adopted the Siesta. When I feel tired I set a timer for an hour and lay down on a bed properly.

That way I feel I get some real sleep, and retain some control. 😁

PS 66 yrs and take bisoprolol amongst others.

I’m 65 and 2 yrs post stenting. Same thing here ! I don’t really worry about it. I walk at least 5k every day. Cycle on my turbo every other day, at least 2 gym sessions a week lifting reasonably heavy weights and 3 sessions with lighter weights. Could fall asleep every afternoon but don’t. I’m not working at the moment so some of it may be boredom. I try to embrace it and be thankful I don’t have a full on job so I can sit with a coffee and chill, read or watch a bit of Netflix. Enjoy it, we’ve served our time !
