Hi All,

After seeing my cardiologist at the hospital a couple of weeks ago as my Doctor couldnt get my blood pressure right, very very low at times, dizzy and falling over,I have angina, she took me off Bisoprolol.and my blood pressure tablets,I see by checking my patient access the Cardio specialist has suggested C.C.B or Ivabradine,I have an appointment with the doctor on Thursday, but just wondered if anyone here knew anything about either please?.I also fall asleep without realising it, I thought maybe age as Iam 72,but the hospital said it was the angina, which I didnt understand as I get a lot of pain when I have an angina attack,Any help would be much appreciated, thank you

A CCB is a Calcium Channel Blocker. These are used to treat blood pressure and to prevent angina (where stable angina is present). Some variants are more effective at treating one condition than another.

Ibvradine uses a different mechanism to prevent angina reducing heart rate like beta blockers.

People can react very differently to the same drug and I think they are trying to reduce BP and angina but avoid hypotension which from experience can be quite unpleasant.

Hi I was on ivabradine for a few weeks to lower heart rate. It did work but I couldn't tolerate side effects. I was prescribed it instead of beta blocker as I'm asthmatic. Good luck my friend

Hi heartlover

I've attached a link to Heart Matters article on calcium channel blockers:

For angina, Ivabradine can be used as a replacement for a beta blocker to reduce your heart rate, which will ease the strain on your heart and hopefully you will experience less angina attacks.

If you would like to discuss the two options given to you in more detail, please call our helpline on 0300 330 3311. Best of luck!

Hi Ashley, thanks for your reply, very helpful except when looking at both these drugs, they seem to be used for lowering the blood pressure,my blood pressure is extremely low at times like 90/72 where I feel very tired and dizzy and have on a couple of occasions fallen over, the highest its been for a while is120/82,so am a little concerned as to taking them,I dont want to fall asleep and not wake up,to be truthful I am a little bit scared, sorry to be a wimp

Hi heartlover

Don't worry-there are many people who can't tolerate certain medications as it drops their blood pressure too low. If you are feeling very dizzy and falling over then it is definitely best to discuss with your doctor and decide what's the best decision for you going forward-I'm sure if you mention you have fallen over previously they will be more concerned about starting BP medications.

Best of luck tomorrow!

Hi, I'm on ivabradine I was told to keep an eye on my heart rate as it shouldn't go below 70. It seems a lot of nhs people don't know what this is for, although not belittling the staff who I've been very grateful for on many an occasion.

Wishing you all the best.
