I am an 80 yr old male with HF , AF and an ICD fitted o have terrible sleep deprevation

I get 8 hrs rest but on and off through the night my sleep is disturbed as every 2 to 3 hrs I need a pee and having trouble going back to sleep , has anybody any suggestions as what to do ? I am on a cocktail of drugs for my heart , don’t want to get anything over the counter as it could have implications for the drugs that I am on.

Personally I would speak to your GP, frequent nightly needs to go to the loo needs investigating. Have you had a PSA test to check your prostate?

have that done every 6 months

That's good to hear. Have the nightly toilet trips started before or after your latest PSA check? Are you drinking more than usual, could you be diabetic? As I said previously , I personally would be speaking to your GP to investigate what's causing the issue, you shouldn't need to go so often and taking something to help you sleep, either won't work in the long run or could just mask whatever may be causing the problems.

Good luck 🤞

Based on my experience if you need to go to the loo to pee several times nights you are clearly not emptying your bladder from the outset, unless you are drinking more than is advisable during the period before you go to bed which I am sure you are not. Although your PSA tests may be within range for your age that still does not discount BPH or something more serious. Your GP is able to help you by prescribing medication which may help you if it is BPH, but if it is really inconvenient for you, or possibly something serious, a referral to urology specialist might be in order, even if it is only to initially carry out basic tests like ultrasound tests to confirm bladder residual volume.

I use a tinnitus relaxer. I don’t have tinnitus, but these little devices help get me off to sleep. Or at least relax. Cost about £35 or just possible your GP surgery might have one to loan.

Hope this might stem the rusting.

+1 on talking to your GP about your frequent need to go to the loo at night. And on that you also try trying to pee again about two minutes after you believe you have finished the first time and before you finally go to bed, and/or restrict what you drink in the hours before you go to bed, especially cups of tea and coffee.

ask you GP for sleep meds. My dad had cardiomyopathy and a heart transplant 24 years ago and was on tamazapan for years (plus cocktails of heart failure drugs and had a defibrillator implanted). I’ve just asked for two weeks worth as I’ve the same issue. It’s an awful time having such little sleep. Wish you all the best x Katy

tell me about it. 67 same problems . As we get older we need less sleep. I’m up peeing 3-4 times a night wake at midnight back to sleep at 2 after another pee stop. I’m male and have enlarged prostate, that doesn’t help.

Less soda and caffeine intake or that is what they say.

I also don't sleep well and go to the loo a couple of times a night. I think the problem is that you lie awake and think I might as well go to the loo whilst awake even though i might not really need to.

So depends if your frequent need is once or twice a night as you are already awake or 3 or 4 times a night and a definite need to go.

Best not to drink after 7 or so at night and as others say, try to go twice within a minute or two and it helps to sometimes go standing up then sitting down.

If its 3 or 4 times a night on a regular basis then perhaps it needs investigating.

Ask the doctor for tamsulosin, they relax your prostrate. You wee more in one go rather than bits and bads take it on a evening . I have been on them for years they really do help

I was on them years ago before I had green light laxer surgery for an enlarged prostate have an appointment @ 10.30 with gp

Unfortunately the prostate can regrow after it has been reduced in size by any of the invasive procedures which do this.

But any man who needs to go the loo 3 or 4 times a night means they are not emptying their bladder properly, and they really need to consider prostate reduction, since unfortunately medication like Tamsulosin can only help so much. If you ignore the problem, or put off advice to have it done as I did initially, you run the risk of an enlarged bladder with muscle degradation (alias a floppy bladder) which means the bladder wall won't have enough strength to properly empty with or without an enlarged prostate, which is a bullet I fortunately managed to dodge .

If you do decide to go to a GP, my Dad was asked to take note of input and output for a few days so you could do that before you go to help speed matters up - all you need is a measuring jug. Here's an example of the sheet - yorkhospitals.nhs.uk/seecms...

I think we’re probably on the same tablets. I take most of my water based tablets in the morning and by 1.30 in the afternoon I take my last 2 diuretics and I’ve not had any problems at night until recently when I started a new drug but I only get up once to go.

Hi Rusty, I don't have heart problems (fingers crossed) but my GP prescribed pregabalin. It is wonderful for the problem you describe so long as you find the right time to take it. It's not for everyone but if it doesn't suit you, gabapentin is an alternative. Sleep is important for all of us, so talk to your GP. Good luck.

I have a similar sleep situation, going to the loo. This may sound a bit lame but it sort of works for me - I sleep in a separate room, when I'm lying awake I put the light on and read for a bit to break up any recurring thoughts, or I put the radio on - oddly the noise can send me to sleep, usually talking.

Hi Rustyoldperson (I'm sure youre not!) 😉

Given the other answers here its worth getting fully checked but heres another possibility....

I can identify with similar, awful disturbed sleep to get me up to the bathroom easily 6 times a night. Tired all through the day too, never felt I got a good nights sleep. Turned out it was severe sleep apnea! Have you been tested for it?

After years of sleep deprivation getting worse I'd gone to the respitory clinic for breathlessness issues and it was one of their checks. They discovered my sleep was disturbed around 52 to 56 times an hour!

Apparently each time your breathings blocked your body releases adrenalin thinking you're waking and that constant repetition can be bad for your heart! It can cause arrhythmias, or as in my case, follow on from arrhythmias. The waking also signals to your brain to release chemicals to say you're awake and it doesnt need to block you from needing the toilet, after surplus fluid has gone to your kidneys for processing while sleeping.

My apnea problem personally is v likely the meds causing horrid sluggishness thats stopped all my dancing, aerobics and depleted my general energy so I've piled on a lot of weight in the decade since my SCAs. The extra weight around the neck can cause it although its not entirely restricted to us bigger folk!

I'd ask to be checked, its a long waiting list but once diagnosed and sleeping with a cpap machine you get a good nights sleep that really changes your waking hours for the better. The bad news is you have to declare it to the DVLA if driving, it may, or may not if controlled, affect consent to drive. 😱 The good news is you sleep well and don't get nightmares, you are the nightmare if seen with the mask on! 🤣

It's worth getting it checked out, even if only to eliminate that possibility.

All the best and I hope you get your sleep problems cured. Everything seems better after a good nights sleep!

As long as there is no other reason causing your nocturnal micturition ( that’s the clinical term for it) you could ask your GP to refer you for a convene catheter which you wear overnight to collect your urine. It fits like a condom but more securely and it stays on all night. It is attached to a collection bag which you simply empty down the toilet in the morning. Worth thinking about maybe
