Hi

I am about to start taking the above. I already take Bisoprolol for AF and also methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis. I'm always concerned about side effects when I take any new drug. If there is someone out there taking the same combo or anything similar. I'd like to know if they've had any problems and if they have any advice. I was told I would have to stop taking Naproxen which I take when I have flare-ups with my arthritis and use co-codamol which I'm not convinced is going to work for me as pain relief

Any help would be great.

Hi Paxim, I take Edoxaban and Bisoprolol, no problems, but can't help with the third drug combo. Bisoprolol maybe left me a little lacking in energy but I was also in recovery so difficult to attribute. They say bisoprolol does take a while to settle down to full effectiveness. 6 months on I have no obvious side effects and can live life normally including exercise. I do also take Atorvastatin which some people seem to have problems with in combo but again no issues. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Id like to ask when you take each medication- do you thinks it matters?

Paxim profile image
Paxim in reply toPaxim

I meant what time of day do you take it -of course the medication matters! Just so there's no misunderstanding!!

😂. In the morning as advised. Always when I get up between 6 and 8 am. I want them to kick in as maximum dose when I'm active during the day. At night I'll take my chances!

hi there - I take the same combo as you, Edoxaban, bisop and atorvastatin. Have you found you have achy joints? Ankles knees hips? I’ve been on this combo since last nov but am finding more issues with joints recently

Hi, I had a long term left knee problem and the beginning of familial hip problem before my stroke. After the stroke I started Couch to 5K and eventually regular runs and a Parkrun every other week on average. I run very slowly and I can't complete 5k in 30 minutes 😂. BUT my joint issues have all improved dramatically. I have run some 10km runs, I walk much longer distances without any issues. It is definitely cause and effect, the biology is the strengthening of the muscles around the joints. I have lost weight too and possibly gained some muscle. 😂 When I had the sudden cardiac arrest (on a Parkrun ) I was in hospital for 7 weeks wired up. The loss of fitness was dramatic. The hospital did nothing to encourage mobility, almost the opposite. They were so risk averse. I would unplug myself and take myself to the toilet. I then started to walk the corridor too. They were very unhappy, they didn't want me to have another SCA on their watch. But it felt like I was being turned into dependency. A Dr conceded my improved heart health since the stroke had aided my recovery. It was so sad to see so many people with COPD going downhill in hospital over this period of time. I know this sort of message of mine will not always be well received. I'm not preaching or hopefully showing off. It was all down to the chance event of coming across C25K and giving it a go. It worked for me. I am a passionate advocate of Parkrun though you can walk, you don't have to run. It's brilliant and inclusive.

Well done you! I am walking much more as I have a new puppy but am wondering if the ankle knee hip issue is old age setting in or meds! Many thanks for your reply

Two rules:Always exercise at a conversational pace

No pain, no pain. (The old adage no pain no gain is rubbish in an exercise for health programme)

it might be worth talking to the pharmacist attached to your doctors group of surgeries about this - details will be on your surgery website or available from your receptionist. They are the ones with the knowledge to advise the doctors.

I take my Edoxaban in the morning and Bisoprolol just before bed, as directed by my consultant. Google taking beta blockers in the evening/what time of day to take beta blockers. There is some research to suggest that there is more protection taken this way..

Ah that’s interesting, my cardiologist advised Edoxaban and bisop in the morning and statins at night before bed

Ive been on bisopol for my heart over 20 yrs and all good. I was put on methrotrex for psoratic arthritus and it made me ill in my stomach so stopped it after 2 weeks. That was 20 yrs ago. It has side effects too but that was the usual back then. I was able to go to enbrel about 10 yrs ago, a hi tech pen, and that did the trick. Regular blood tests are needed in any case. Let your doc know if it doesnt suit you. Bisopol is usually well tolerated though. Good luck.

Hi PaximI've got AF and have been taking edoxaban since May. I'm also on bisoprolol. In addition I'm on digoxin, all to control my heart best. I've had no side effects so far. Hopefully that'll be the case for you too.

I can't speak for interactions with your other drugs, but there'll be someone on here who'll be able to share their experiences.

All the best

I take Edoxaban and Bisoprolol (plus several other medications) and have had no problems. The reason why you can no longer take Naproxen is due to the risk of stomach bleeding. I can’t take it or ibuprofen. Good luck with the new combo!

Am the same as Bigheart58 - no problems at all with Edoxaban and Bisoprolol plus other meds for cholesterol and high blood pressure. Also not able to take naproxen, ibroprofen and aspirin. Hope it all goes ok

Why have you been told to stop naproxen?? I was on bisoprolol and edoxaban alongside naproxen and omeprazole( this one protects stomach) with no problems,I'm not on bisoprolol now as not in af anymore

Hi PaximI also have AF and RA and have taken all the drugs you mention but not concurrently.

I currently don't take any heart meds following successful third ablation (15 months of NSR) but I do take methotrexate and steroids, since February this year. I've had awful experience of both. But sadly they are necessary. Gradually weaning off the latter which is itself problematic. I also could not tolerate bisoprolol at all. Terrible breathlessness and fatigue. I took amiodarone as well for AF and this caused underactive thyroid and eye issues.

So all I can say is out of all of these meds, and others I have taken, edoxoban was the least problematic. No issues at all.

Hope this helps a little.

Best of luck. I feel for you, knowing what it's like with these 2 pretty debilitating conditions and the associated drugs.

I have been taking edoxoban for around 6 months now due to AF and have had no side effects whatsoever and I am extremely sensitive to a lot of medication. Good luck.

I am on Edoxaban and Digoxin. I was previously on Bisoprolol, but according to hospital consultant it probably sparked off late onset asthma with me being in hospital for two weeks being treated. No problems with with side effects on the meds. I am on Fostair inhaler for asthma, but no problems with that.

It's ok to take the gel version of Ibuprofen. I use it a lot for back pain. My Dr prescribes it. I'm on Apixaban. Co-codamol is very good but it makes me throw up.

All the best.

Hi - The Edoxaban is an anti-coagulant and the most important med to be on if you have AF as it reduces the risk of stroke - many people on both an anticoagulant and Bisoprolol with AF so the combination is not a problem - hopefully this agrees with you as appreciate we’re all different

I too take bisoprolol and edoxaban , and I dont have problems with the edoxaban. I dont take anything for arthitis, though also take doxazosin for blood pressure and digoxin for the AF,

I had to stop anti inflammatory drugs 2 years ago when started on edoxaban for PAF. Rheumatologist wants me to start methotrexate but I’m scared to start that. Are you ok with it? Cocodamol and a top up with Oromorph doesn’t touch the pain as diclofenac used to. Take care 🦊x

CallMeSunny profile image
CallMeSunny in reply toBingofox007

Be guided by your Rheumatology Consultant: uncontrolled rheumatoid arthritis not only causes pain but, because it’s a systemic disease, can cause damage to all/any of your organs. Taking methotrexate (a gold standard drug which works for most patients) should help hugely with your pain levels and will simultaneously be preventing damage to organs & joints. If you find the tablets don’t suit you (maybe gastric isssues) then you can move onto subcutaneous injections. The best place to go for advice (other than your rheumatology team) is N.R.A.S…for excellent leaflets and direct phone number to speak with a member of the team. Health Unlocked have a dedicated forum too. Give yourself your best chance of becoming pain free …The Rheumatology teams work closely with Cardiologists, Respiratory and other Consultants too. I wish you better health. X

Gosh that is so helpful and positive. I’ve put off starting it for 6 months as other RA drugs made me feel awful. Thank you again for sharing your experience, your and information. Take care 🦊x

I empathise with you; starting a new, additional drug is a time of concern …we all hate being “drugged up” but I for one am immensely grateful I took the plunge and now definitely know the benefits of my MTX…..also have to take lifelong Rivaroxaban! Do check out NRAS though, you’ll find a wealth of information there. X

Hi

Sounds very familiar! I was prescribed methotrexate years ago and also found naproxen an effective go to when I was having a flare up. I was lecturing at the time so I couldn't really afford to have anytime off. I've never had any problems with it and like you I was apprehensive when I started.

I've managed to cut my dose from 5 tablets a week to 3 over the years but this has been over a long period of time. I now find myself in a situation where things have changed because I have AF so I need the same type of pain relief during occasional flare ups but now having to ditch naproxen and use cocodamol because Edoxaban has been introduced. I agree with you it is certainly not as effective at all. I'm looking for something that works if I find it l'll let you know and you can try too !!

Broseley profile image
Broseley

Hi, I've been on all 3 for several years. Also prednisolone for PMR. I take the edoxaban in thr morning and the bisoprolol at night. No problems with either. I had to reduce the bisoprolol early on from 5mg to 1.25mg because it made me feel sluggish and lethargic.

The biggest nuisance is not being able to use an NSAID like naproxen or ibuprofen, not even the topical gel. That was my go to painkiller. Paracetamol just doesn't do it and co-codamol makes me constipated.

DiyChas profile image
DiyChas

I can't take NSAIDs due to AFib and Eliquis and can only take acetaminophen.Bisoprolol had been a problem, until I cut in half (now 2.5) and take at nighttime.

I was told it is used to keep my HR under 100 (now 80).

I have CAD but had been very active (HR around 50), until my 2 stents were required (4 years ago at 75).

I have found there are many different reactions to bisoprolol and you need to experiment.

But be sure your cardiologist is aware.

hiya, I’m on same blood thinner your about to start for 3 months now. So far no side effects. Only thing like you I cannot take any anti-inflammatory tablets that I’m struggling without. Also had to cancel a small tattoo I had booked 😢

Hello 😊, I’ve just started Bisoprolol and the only other drugs I take are for my underactive thyroid and Omeprazole. I was taking Cocodamol but stopped it as I read it’s not good with Bisoprolol and now my pain is even worse. If you are taking it together I’m thinking perhaps I could 🤔? I will speak to our Pharmacist but wonder what your thoughts on it are?

Paxim profile image
Paxim in reply toGrannysue12

Hi

I think I'm going to check with the pharmacist too. The appropriate pain relief is so important. I'm still taking Bisoprolol too. I am now faced with the prospect of having to introduce Edoxaban. I've tried co-codamol for pain relief suggested by my GP it certainly isn't as effective as naproxen which I use to take before they changed my medication. Finding the right combo of pain relief and medication is obviously an individual thing but so important to your quality of life. Thanks to everyone who have responded much appreciated
