Omeprazole and Edoxaban

I have been told that Edoxaban (anti coagulant) damages my stomach and therefore I'm advised to take Omeprazole.

Omeprazole makes me feel sick.

Does anyone else take Edoxaban without any stomach calming drugs?

Hi Ogilvie, hubby has been taking Edoxaban for some 2-3 years but has not been prescribed a stomach protector or appeared to need one.

Have you ever experienced any stomach problems previously? If so, your Dr might feel that you are slightly more vulnerable to such side effects from the blood thinner.

If it is still considered that you need a stomach protector alongside the Edoxaban, perhaps switching to another PPI such as Lansoprazole may suit you better. Certainly you should not put up with the nausea.

I was once prescribed Omeprazole alongside steroids, and I had a similar bad reaction. I came off them and lined my stomach with ‘live’ yoghurt before the steroids instead. Worked a treat for the next 6 years.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that.

I don't have a history of stomach problems however i was in hospital 3 years ago and they gave me stomach protection because I was on powerful antibiotics , opium based pain killers and potassium tablets. I suspect I have just been left on the stomach pills and up to now no one has asked why!

If you’ve been taking Omeprazole for as long as 3 years, then be careful of stopping suddenly. Perhaps best to taper off slowly to avoid any rebound reaction.

Hi. Your GP has a few choices of stomach pills till you find one that suits you. I think I tried 4. Do persist!

I started off with Lansoprazole but experienced difficulties, now I take the Omeprazole and the Edoxaban together at night before I go to bed, works a treat for me. It did take me a while to get the meds right in the beginning. Best of luck!

I was prescribe Edoxaban by the HF nurse and there was no mention of any stomach protection. However, I did have severe dizzy spells an hour after taking it so now on a nightly dose of Rivoraxaban with no dizziness.

My GP told me that the PPI's are really taken as an insurance policy, to reduce the amount of acid in the stomach just in case you do get an ulcer, this reducing the danger of bleeding. He also said they were "prescribed like smarties these days" and that he thought in years to come they would cause other problems unnecessarily. This was after I was having terrible problems with Lanzeprazole. However he did prescribe Omeprazole and said to take it if the Aspirin caused indigestion, which it does sometimes, so I tend to take it now and again with no problems. I did think it was causing constipation but apparently Aspirin is notorious for that, I find a couple of pints now and again keeps me regular :)

A couple of pints of Old Peculier does it for me!

Excellent choice, the old cures are the best.

Just back from Doc and can report.....

1. I will not be getting any Old Peculier on the NHS but she did add that I was old and peculiar enough!

2. I could try dropping down to 10 mg (from 20mg) Omeprazole.

3. I could just stop taking Omeprazole and see what happens.

I have decided to stop taking Omeprazole and see what happens. Thanks for al replies - I hope it helps with the old knowledge bank.

Mmmmm. Quite a lot of these drugs bung you up. Some of them loosen you up as well, so maybe its all a balancing act. I tend to take the Omeprazole on days I am out running, as otherwise I tend to get a bit of indigestion from the Aspirin. On other days I might go down the peculiar route, maybe accompanied with a Prawn Vindaloo, now that will get things shifting. Happy days eh good luck.

problem is the omeprazole reduces the stomach acid then food is not processed adequately and it can cause slow moving transit in the bowel. We need the acidic environment in the stomach to prepare the food for digestion. I take Centaurium drops in the morning which helps to balance the stomach acid and helps with food transit-someone suggested it on one one of the forums and I have no problems now. I wouldn’t know about Old Peculiar but the name doesn’t fill me with positive vibes!!🙄
