Heart rate whilst sleeping

I started taking calcium channel blockers 4 days ago due to my heart rate spiking when standing, showering etc. Last night my Apple Watch shows that my heart rate was 120-138 for around 20 minutes. Has any experienced this whilst sleeping before??

Seems a bit high? What is your state when it goes to the 130s? Are you in deep sleep? Maybe not - are you having a nightmare?

My understanding is that your heart rate typically drops during sleep, then starts to increase before/at wake up.

I don’t recall having a nightmare, since taking the tablets my dreams have been really odd but not scary by any means

Inwould probably have it confirmed if it happens again. I guess you are using Apple watch? Apple watch can throw out some outliers at times, who knows that during your sleep the watch goes out of position. Maybe have the watch tighter on the wrist and see what happens. I would nornally assume that if your heart races during sleep - you probably feel it in some shape or form.

Hi could be medication taking time to settle have u been checked for AF

this may sound daft, but is your wrist a bit sweaty?

when I excericse and I get sweaty, my watch starts to cock up the heart rate and it just starts to climb and climb.

if I move it, or wipe my wrist ,then it starts recording the heart rate properly.

Id of expected your heart rate to climb when exercising, surely that is the actual point. I know my watch is recording correctly as i check my BP and HR using the same bp machine my GP uses .My watch is not Apple, it's the latest Samsung. My heart rate resting is between 46-50. yet while exercising i aim to raise it around 110 - 120. both my bike and watch register the same.. Should i ever got a heart rate so high while im sleeping id get myself to my GP immediately.

I know that's the point of excericse. my point is when my watch contacts the sweaty wrist, even at rest, after my manual measurements of my pulse have shown a decrease in heart rate, the watch will show constantly increasing shifts in HR , which correct themselves after I wipe the sweat away.

I apologise i had not fully understood what you actually was trying to say. i was trying to show maybe its an issue with Apple not recording properly while hot or sweaty fortunately i do not have the issue.

I watch doesn’t work right if it has dirty like grease or sweat on it. Often have to wipe it even to charge it.

How ever mine doesn’t go that high when sleeping , 138 seems high, tachycardia.

Have words with GP

Hi

Is dreaming a possibility ? I don't know how long dreams last maybe someone can answer that ! I have been told HR can spike quite a lot if say having a nightmare etc .

Yes, mine was caught on monitors. I’ve had AF, tachy and NSVT while asleep. For a little while it made me a teeny bit nervous about sleeping but I’m over that now thankfully!

Hi Connie. Personally I would rather not know what my heart is doing while I sleep and would never wear a heart monitor watch. It would stress me too much and therefore make matters worse. I have also heard that these watches can actually harm your heart and would never use one.

I have since taken it off as I was becoming quite obsessive with checking!

I have postural hypotension ie BP goes very low on standing but to compensate the HR goes up. I don’t wear a smart watch and have to catch high HR either with bp monitor or oximeter, so have found suddenly woke up in middle of the night with high HR, or odd activities like putting a coat on will send it high. My problems are Long Covid related and over the last 4 years put on 6 different BP drugs; bisoprolol gave me bad claustrophobic nightmares that would send HR up. Also tested for sleep apnea ( too mild for treatment). In Jan. was tested with a tilt table which confirmed the low BP/HR never picked up with ecgs, Bp monitor, even with DIY nor my local hospital NASA test. First thing Falls consultant did was remove bisoprolol, then shifted my amlodipine from am to pm, then removed indapamide … then abandoned to GP!

I have microvascular & vasospastic angina, and high HR above 120 has woken me up early hours of the morning on a number of occasions. I keep an eye, and ensure it doesn't happen too frequently.

Does your doctor know? I have been told resting heartrate should be between 60-100. Anything over 100 is considered elevated (tachycardia). Do you have an arrythmia?

All the best to you!

Hey, the dr isn’t too sure at the moment what is causing the high heart rate. I took diltiazem briefly but was taken off it as it was not making any changes to my heart rate and I already have a low blood pressure. I have to wait for the 24hr ECG for them to know for certain and have been asked to complete more blood tests.
