My consultant today said that my pacemaker recorded my underlying heart rate as 90bpm. She felt this was too high and has upped my beta blocker which will make me feel rubbish. I am confused as my resting heart rate is around 65 and my heart rate only goes above 90 if I'm moving around. The consultant just kept saying that this was the recorded underlying heart rate. Can anyone explain what an underlying heart rate is?

Underlying heart rate what is it?
Basically it’s your pulse rate. Everybody varies but 90 is a bit high. It means that your heart is working a bit too hard an needs to be calmed down.
Thanks for the reply. I'm just a bit confused as my own heart rate monitor tells me my resting heart rate is 66 and if I look at my rate over the day the vast majority of the time it is below 90. My pulse usually ranges from 54 to 124 over the course of the day. If I average those two numbers I would gat a result around 90 but that isn't my normal pulse. I just don't understand how the pacemaker is saying my normal pulse is 90.
Hello
I would phone the BHF Cardiac Nurse on Monday they are excellent in breaking things down in an easy to understand way. What pacemaker do you have it is for Pacing ? BHF number is 0300 330 3311
Regards
Thanks for reply. I have a Crtd after getting my aortic valve replaced. I phoned BHF yesterday the nurse was great but couldn't answer my query fully. Obviously a pacemaker measures something different from resting heart rate but 90 seems very high when I look at my pulse over the day.
Hi. As you’ve already spoken with the BHF nurses why not ring your Cardiologist’s secretary and ask if the consultant or someone on their team will contact you with a simple explanation of the difference between resting heart rate and underlying heart rate. Then would you post the answer on here in case someone else has the same query going forward?
Thank s and Best wishes.
Thanks for suggestion. I will contact them on Monday and see if they can explain more fully. My consultant is very good at his job but not the best communicator. Will post any answer I get.
