WORSE BP MEDS EVER (AMLODIPINE)

Hope I have enough room to write this. My wife and I both took amlodipine 5 mg. I was on it for about 10 years and my wife for 5 years. My wife was having all kinds of problems and I didn't think I had any. Well boy was I wrong. When she quit taking it the withdrawals she had made me quit also. I figured anything that had a reaction like this I don't want it. So here it goes. I quit and my bp went up real high 175/ 105 and then it would drop to 110/65 back and forth. While i was on it bp was 130/ 90 most of the time. My heart rate just sitting was 110 to 120. was tired all the time even while taking the amlodipine. this lasted about 2 weeks and then slowly went down. My GP put me on valsartan. Now my bp has leveled off and stays around 115/75. So that is good and I have no problems now. When i quit the amlodipine things changed that I didn't have any idea the pill was causing. My arms was so numb that i took nerve pills twice a day cause the hurt so bad. Acid reflux was so bad i went to hospital thinking heart attack. Skin was dry and itchy. Ears was ringing. My back was so bad it hurt all the time. Sinus problems out of this world. The weight gain. I was taking pills for all this. So when i quit the amlodipine all this went away. I don't have to take a nap during the day anymore. This is 1 med you don't want. This is just a little bit of what happen to me. Seems as the side effects just sneak up on you and you have no idea what is. Is it the pill or something else. just remember when you come off this med it is like being on drugs. This med has destroyed my life and my wife's. Her life much much more than mine. I am sure she will be posting very soon.

sorry you’ve had such a rough time. My cardiologist said I may have to go on this drug but I’ve been ok since having CRT-D fitted so he hasn’t mentioned it again. I looked it up and wouldn’t want all the side effects. Well done for coming off it that must have been traumatic for you also. Hope you start to feel better soon.

I was on Amlodipine first thing the AF nurse did at the clinic was take me off it and said wish GPs didn't prescribe it. My legs and ankles where very swollen and painful. I already had pain in my legs from my neurological condition. The skin on my shins was red and very shiny and tight. And just above my left ankle it was so swollen it covered my ankle joint and was on my foot. In a few weeks my legs went right down and finally could wear ankle boots. Had been on it for 3-4 years .

Having problems with water retention at the moment but seeing the nurse today.

We take what is prescribed for us never thinking how much damage it can do. But we live and learn. 🤗

I am so sorry to hear that you and your wife (and others who’ve commented) have had such a bad time on Amlodopine. But, to allay any fears on people newly put on this medication I feel I must say - I guess we’re all different, and different medication suits different people. I’ve been on Amlodopine for 18 months so far, with no side effects or problems. Just had bloods taken which have come back clear. So I would say to anyone taking Amlodopine see how it goes, if you’re ok that’s good, if not talk to your GP. Take care.

I’m glad you’re feeling much better, but as the other comments say everyone is different.

Ive been on Amlodipine for 13yrs, don’t have any problems with it , it’s kept my blood pressure down and that’s the most important thing, good luck !!!

I am sorry to hear you had these problems - it is helpful for us to know that these side effects can happen, so thank you for sharing your experience

unfortunately nobody can predict wether or not someone will have side effects from any drug (all medications are drugs) - we are all biologically slightly different, this affects the way drugs act in our bodies - one day we will all have medications tailored for our specific genetic make-up, but until then we have to accept what is available and at least we have some choice in most things

clearly it made sense for you and your wife to stop taking amlodipine, but many people take it with no additional problems

I also had nasty side effects from amlodipine, but mine were immediate and I stopped taking it after a couple of days - but my mother now takes it and we are very similar health-wise, but she has no side effects

Hello I'm on Amlodipine I was prescribed when my cardiology department decided to stop my Atenanol and Diltizam..things went OK for a few weeks and then my BP shot up I got a GP appointment and she put me on Amlodipine 10mg which was OK to start with but had to be dropped to 5mg which I have been on for several years and I can't really say it causes me any problem.
