Ralphs had a really good week , even though it was BH. Physio are pleased with him and say he can walk up and down the ward corridor without a nurse with him as long as he asks if it's okay each time.
Had his cuff down and hour a day, and today SALT took it down at 11 this morning and stayed and played cards with him for an hour. Then told the nurses to leave the cuff down until bedtime unless he struggled. Then put it back up overnight and down again Saturday and Sunday daytime. It was still down when I left just before 5. I stressed that they weren't to remove tracheotomy like they did in Sheffield which is when it all went more badly.
They assured me there is no plan to remove it, just get him to an uncuffed one in the next few weeks if possible.
As the cuff was down every so often you could hear his voice which thrilled the nurses and they all came in to listen, lol.
We played cards for a couple of hours and I also did his feed and water into his RIG, we're both quite confident with that now. Nurses just bring it all in and leave us to it, just say buzz if you need us.
I'm still quite nervous with the cuff down that long after the disaster last time, but these are taking it steadily.
Have a great weekend everyone

Staff are trying really hard to get him an uncuffed trachy before he comes home. Then at outpatient clinic they'll eventually try to get him eating and drinking if possible.

Brilliant news! The physiowould not have said that unless they were happy. It's a hard life being a SALT (speech and language therapist) playing cards But it would have relaxed Ralph and they could assess him while playing! xx
fabulous news Sue and Ralph lovely to read some good news. Hope he comes home soon as I am convinced the sun is waiting just for him to get home before it makes an appearance 😁
Great news! I'm so relieved, it sounds like a much smoother week, which is just what you need. Small steps in the right direction, all the way home! Continuing to pray for you both 🙏
Thats fantastic news Sue, Ralph will definitely be in that garden for the summer if this progress keeps up , fingers crossed 🤞 still praying for you both 🙏 😊 x
Thanks, I haven't seen her since Xmas, been too long! She's been crazy busy working (ICU Dr and anaesthetist) and also been away doing her expedition and mountain work as well as managing to fit a holiday in too.
That's fantastic Sue! It sounds as though Ralph really is getting the best care there. Everyday now is a day closer to him coming home to you. I think we'll all have a little party for you both on that day! Many thanks for the update xx
Good morning Sue. Your post was very pleasing to read....what a difference a week makes!. Fantastic that Ralph is being allowed to be more independent....he's obviously getting stronger with the walking and getting about. The staff sound lovely and that's a real bonus. It all seems to be going and staying on the right track and you sound a lot more buoyant about it all too. Have a good weekend, take care and look forward to the next update xx😁
Brilliant news and good to read. Hope Ralph soon gets home. With his determination and true grit, it doesn’t seem as if that is far away. Just in time for summer and to feel the sun on his face. Perfect time of the year for his recovery. Look after yourself and feet up when possible, because busy days ahead, but happy days. God bless.
Sue that is brilliant news. So pleased for you and Ralph . That's the power of love . You are eachother's other half and together you make a whole . Ralph is doing everything he can to get fitter for you and stop you worrying so much. And you are fighting for him to have the life he wants . When how I think back to when I first read about you both neither of you thought he could do what he is now. And you fighting to get him the care he needed.
This isn't the life you planned for but a different life. But the main thing is you have eachother and you would fight dragons for eachother. With Ralph's progress hopefully you get him home sooner than you thought. That's my hope for you both and your family.
The nurses looking after him sound lovely. And them coming in to hear him shows how much they care . And how much they trust you to with his feed and drink. Your confidence must be boosted to know once home you will have no trouble doing whatever Ralph needs.
Hope Ralph goes from strength to strength and I am sure he will with you by his side .
Big hug for you and a gentle one for Ralph .
Your posts give everyone hope no matter what they are facing in their lives .💕
Hi Sue, thank you for that Friday Feeling 🤪. I'm really pleased to hear your update, good ole Ralph, I'm very pleased for him too 😀. Nothing more one can say other than good news!!! Steve
Hi Sue I was just thinking about you both the other day, I am so glad to hear that everything is going well now heading towards the day that Ralph gets back into his own bed. It's brilliant that they can take the cuff down for such a long time, progress is really being made now. Take care char x
Good morning Sue. Lovely news to wake up to. I hope Ralph continues to improve each day. Thinking of you both. Enjoy your little nap this weekend too. 😴🌸🩷
What wonderful news ❤️❤️. So happy Ralph is doing so well & that you Sue can now be confident to know you can administer Ralph’s medical needs on his return home (which will definitely happen - he’s obviously determined to get there 😊 🏠 ). We don’t usually have much say in what happens to our bodies, but how we mentally deal with the aftermath makes such a huge difference to recovery. Wishing you both the very very best going forward 🤗 🫂
Wonderful news...every little progress each day is good...I hope this can continue and that you both have the strength to go the distance..goal being...that Ralph can come home and by then can recover his speech and movement...all the best to you both..
Hello Gardenview , I have just read your update (for some reason it went to the junk box.) what great news I am so happy for you both. Things are progressing nicely. Let’s hope Ralph will finally be home when the summer finally comes along. I think it’s waiting for him . Take care hope you are sleeping a bit easier now. Xx
Ah Sue, this is FANTASTIC. It's wonderful news, truly wonderful. I am convinced Ralph's healing is going to keep on and on and he may even fully recover to the point he doesn't need any aids anymore, eventually. I know that must feel ike a huge stretch right now, but considering what he's come back from - he's flying, and once his Swedish nose comes and he's not 'tethered' by the oxygen link, it'll inspire him on more and more.Tons of good wishes to you both, I smile when I think of you. Your honest story is indescribably inspirational. XX
