Hi everyone, well lets start with I had a triple bypass 2 year ago after I suffered a cardiac arrest at ten thousand feet on a mountain in the French Alps, I am on blood thinner , statin and high blood pressure tablets, ive had a few teeth problems, my teeth seem to be more brittle and a couple have shattered, not sure if my meds are doing this, anyway I have been thinking of taking calcium supplements to help, has anyone had similar problems? or can anyone recommend a certain supplement. I am very active and go hill walking ect to keep fit and I don't think i have any real side effects from my meds????? Ron

The usual advice on here, certainly from me, when enquiring about taking any supplement in addition to medication, especially for what could be a medical condition, is to go talk to a pharmacist who is best placed to give the help you are seeking.

Ask your GP to test your Vit D, calcium and parathyroid hormone levels. Hyperparathyroidism can create problems with your teeth, together with a myriad of other symptoms, worth finding out.

Hi Ron,

I wouldn't think your meds are affecting your teeth... certainly not having such an effect just two years down the line. I would think you may be like me, just affected by genetics. I had the complete back half fall off one of mine and my NHS dentist referred me to a dental surgeon to have the remainder removed. I later learnt that it could have been repaired. Such is the nature of NHS dental care!

My teeth have improved immensely since I changed my dentist and went private. I realise not everyone can afford this, but it has certainly worked out well for me. I've just had two molar implants which cost an arm and a leg, but are worth it as it has made chewing my food much easier. No more worries about what I can eat.

I have never considered a calcium supplement, even though osteoporosis runs in the family. I have been taking vitamin D since the dreaded virus appeared and that has helped me in many ways, though whether it has improved my teeth is entirely open to debate. I think the electric tooth brush, inter-dental brushes and floss and regular hygenist visits have more to do with that. 😀
