My cardiologist began listing some of the possible side effects which caused some concern. Some were said to be rare, but still sound pretty bad. I read of some posts from a year ago. Since it’s a relatively new drug, I’m interested in hearing of anyone’s experience with it. Thanks in advance. Cheers!

I felt the same as you when i heard about the possible side effects. I was put on dapagliflozin for type 2 diabetes to protect my heart, and given a long list of potential problems plus sick day rules, which concerned me a lot. I went to see a private endocrinologist who reviewed everything for me. He changed the dose to xigduo and took me off my BP tablets as he said the dapagliflozin would do the same job. He went through my list of questions and was very reassuring. I have to say I have had no problems whatsoever. The tablet suits me very well. I have changed from a very low carb diet to just adding in a small bit at every meal, just to ensure my body has something to work with; I took some time to adjust to this, but I now have half a piece of sourdough toast with breakfast, a small crumpet or piece of toast for lunch and half a jacket potato or a handful of frozen fries (say) for supper. I find I cope much better with, say, a small quiche or a bit of cheesecake if out.

I try to make sure I drink water to keep hydrated but also green tea, black coffee, diet coke; in truth I haven't noticed any difference to before. It's been a very good tablet for me, my blood sugar is better controlled and my diet is easier than before.

Awesome. Thank you greatly for the detail. Do you add the toast and cheesecake because your glucose is low from the Dapa? All the best.

Cheesecake is the treat on eating out 🤣but doesn't put up my blood sugar if I leave the base. Toast, half jacket potato etc is because the nurse said have a small amount of carbs with each meal to prevent the very small possibility of keto lactic acidosis as I was very low carb before. I find I can eat a little less strictly than before

Hi. Do you mind sharing what your diet consists of as far as carbs and protein is concerned please? Also does it consist of much fruit with their natural sugars? Thank you in advance. Cheers.

Hi, my diet has been lowish carb up to now as a type 2. Have now added in a few additional carbs for the dapagliflozin (about 90 g carb a day)Breakfast: mushrooms and half tomato fried in olive oil

Half slice sourdough bread

Couple of slices bacon or omelette

Never eat cereal or porridge, blood sugars soars and stays up for ages.

Lunch: berries like strawberries and blueberries with full fat greek yoghurt . Not tropical fruits and only small bits of apple and pear. The natural sugars in those fruits raise my bs quickly and too high.

A piece of sourdough toast or ryvitas with cheese spread

Or mixed salad with chicken breast and 2 small potatoes

Supper: roast chicken, steak, pork chops or mince with various vegetables, stir fry veg, half jacket potato or handful of fries, gravy.

Tend to stay off sweet potato and mash, but use butternut.

A couple of pieces of dark chocolate or small bowl low sugar ice cream

Michael Moseley diet is great for diabetics, but need to add in the small amount of carbs for the dapagliflozin.

Very rarely use refined flour as it raises my bs very quickly. Don't eat pastry, biscuits and cakes.

Best wishes, hope this helps

Hi,

I have been on dapagliflozin for a few years now and have not experienced any noticeable side effects, having said that though I'm very lucky as I can't recall ever having any significant or long term side effects from any medication I've been on.

Good luck and best regards,

Very good. We’re you started on 5 or 10mg? Thanks.

I’ve been on dapagliflozin for a year and a half now. The first few months nothing seemed different then suddenly I began peeing none stop and got rid of a lot of fluid from my body. Breathing became better and life felt a little better for me as a person with EF of 10% it climbed to 23%.

When the cardiologist told me about it I was scared to take after she mentioned the side effects that can occur, reading the leaflet was even worse, but I follow all the rules and I haven’t had any problems with it

I have been on dapagliflozin now for a couple of years thanks to my cardiologist, it is the best I have felt since my HA 14 years ago together with the usual cocktail of heart drugs. The only side effect I have had is a couple of bouts of penile thrush and the urge to pee more often, that could be due to advancing years, by the way it makes your pee frothy!

Hi. Awesome? So the thrush is easily manageable and they want you to stay on it? Were you started with 5 or 10mg? All the best. Thank you.

10mg, I think its long term as I have an enlarged heart and borderline Type2 diabetes I was referred to the Cardiologist following a chest X ray for a major chest infection and that was found. My Cardiologist was a Heart failure specialist but I was found not to have HF but he adjusted the usual heart meds upwards and added Dapagliflozin and Amalodipine for high BP. To be honest its the best I have felt for years, Unfortunately I have now been diagnosed with COPD after years of breathing in flour dust in my 50+ years as a baker, this was discovered by a CT scan instigated by GP Lung Heath Programme, one more CT due in August. Not bad for a 72 year old!

May I ask if the thrush is easily manageable and the doctor still wants to leave you on it. Thanks.

Geoff51 profile image

I assume as my cardiologist has handed me back to my GP that I will be on dapagliflozin for the forseeable future, The incedance of Thrush has receded the longer I have been on it. Word of warning, buy generic Thrush treatment rather than Canestan as its half the price of the branded item and is suitable for men and women as a single capsule.

I haven't had thrush from the dapagliflozin, but did previously. Best to stay hydrated and catch it quickly with the fluconazole. I asked the nurse for a couple of tablets to keep in stock for holidays etc so any bouts didn't take hold.
