Prescribed Bisoprolol / aspirin having side effects any advice?

Stuart_scharcarnie profile image

Hi, I am new to this website my name is Stuart and I'm 41. I was diagnosed with a LBBB aged 39 in 2016 after having an episode of chest pain this showed up on an ecg, my bloods were tested and no traces of the enzyme troponin were found so cardiology confirmed I hadn't had myocardial infarction but said I could of in the past or it could be genetic ( my father has a RBBB) I was referred by cardiology to have an Echocardiogram this confirmed the LBBB and I was told I have a LVEF of 45% and that the rest of my heart appears normal, I was never put on any medication by my Gp so I pressumed all was ok, anyway 2yrs later I had since moved areas so was under a new surgery and recently have been experiencing tightness and pain in the centre of my chest and in my neck my arms have felt heavy, i get out of breath really easily just walking up the stairs sometimes can bring these pains on so i made an appointment with my Gp i told him my symptoms he checked my blood pressure and it was 171/101 which is high he thinks by my symptoms I have Angina so has prescribed Bisoprolol and asprin and a nitrate spray he has arranged some rapid access appointments at the hospital for a chest x-ray and another Echocardiogram I am still waiting for the appointments which I'm told should be within a 2week time frame however since taking the medication (6days) I've been having some side effects, I generally feel week, always tired nauseous and having sweats, and feeling light headed has anyone else felt like this with this medication? I'm really worried about this I suffer also with bipolar disorder and have serious anxiety problems, this seems to worsen the chest pain / angina I'm still experiencing and I'm worried that seeing as 2yrs has past with no BP monitoring or heart medication that my EF may have dropped lower I'm feeling so anxious about having another Echocardiogram it's making me feel so low and depressed. I also dreed taking the medication as it makes me feel ill after a few hours.

Bisopralol does that to me along with weight gain. I've been on it since the end of April.

It seems that these are recognised side effects of the drug;

rxlist.com/zebeta-side-effe...

I wonder if you should discuss this with your doctor to see if there is an alternative. Although I think this is the common drug for this, when I was in hospital there was an alternative that was a more rapid acting but did not last as long drug that was suggested. Although I myself am on Bisoprolol.

Potentially you are having unwanted side effects of bisoprolol. I take bisoprolol without any issues at all but I know enough to know that it doesn’t work for everyone, fortunately there are alternatives. It can be a matter of trial and error until you find the one that suits you best.

Hi Stuart I have been on bisoprolol since January after emergency admission to hospital, dose increased from 5mg daily to 10mg daily due to AF. I too had felt nauseous & extremely tired but these have subsided slightly. I have also been prescribed an anticoagulant along with digoxin as heart rate is still high & irregular, am on waiting list for cardioversion but no idea when this will happen. You have a lot going on & it's understandable that your anxiety has increased but remember the diagnostics are there to determine what may be wrong with your heart & to prescribe the correct treatment to help you feel & get better. There's so much to take on board but please persevere & try and remain positive, maybe go back & talk to your GP about your concerns. All the very best to you. J

Hi, Beanette Thanks for your reassuring message I understand I do need all the necessary checks on my heart to get the correct diagnosis it's just so very daunting, I think I will discuss my fears and anxiety with my Gp also. Once again many thanks hopefully we will both get sorted out soon all the best.

You are more than welcome Stuart! Yes let's hope so at least we can provide some help to each other on this site which I am very grateful for. We know that we're not alone in our suffering. Take good care.

Hi stuart,

You sound very similar to me, I am new here too.

I have a LBBB they found it about 5yrs ago after a massive panic attack that they thought was a heart attack, did lots of investigations and then discharged me.

Over the last 6mths I have been extremely tired, have palpitations and a heavy left arm and pain in my chest and arm too, so tgey sent me for an mri.

I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and I have started on bisoprolol & ramapril and they make me feel the same as you.

I am on day 5 now and I don’t feel as woozy thank goodness.

Its easier said than done but try and talk away your anxieties. Someone suggested to me last night to speak to the bhf helpline which I will be very soon as I suffer with mental health too & hopefully it will help.

Hope you are ok

Hi there. Im not in the same situation as you but i can offer my experience with bisoprolol. I take it too and have done for just over 2 years. When i started it it made me crash. God i felt so tired all the time. Felt like living in treacle. After about 2 maybe 3 weeks though i got used to it and didnt feel any other side effect. Sorry I cant be of any decent advice but hopefully it will pass for you too. Happy new year.
