Hi can anyone tell me how long they had to wait for results from echocardiogram plz .. had mine done 3 weeks ago and have not been told anything
Echocardiogram: Hi can anyone tell me... - British Heart Fou...
Echocardiogram

7 days. If the GP requested it phone them, if it was a consultant, call their secretary to chase it up. 21 days is too long.
Hi there...it can take ages to get these important results, sometimes you have to wait until you get to see the cardiology consultant..The first time I had my Echo done it was March 2023, the hospital sent a letter out telling me there findings, the letter took 3 weeks to get to me. I didn't get to see the cardiology consultant until March 2024 to discuss the results and what the next steps would be. Do you have any details of the cardiology consultant you will be seeing? Because if you new there name you could contact there secretary and explain to them you haven't been told about your results. You could always make appointment with your local doctors to see if they have your results. Another way you use the NHS app and see weather your letter has been up loaded. I know it's really worrying about waiting for results. I hope I have helped. Take care
Thank you for replying , yes i have seen cardioligist who referred me for the echo ,i have rang his secretary last week who told me a letter was on way to me and also one on way to my GP ,as of today neither has recieved any letter , have checked my NHS app in documents and nothing on there .
Just want to underline the point about the NHS app. If you get the ‘advanced’ NHS app (I had to fill in a form at my GP surgery to ask for this) then all results, letters to and from consultants, notes from GP consultation can be seen on that as soon as they are available. The ECG, done at the GPs, was reported and a full image uploaded within 24 hours
I don’t have the advance app just the normal NHS app and all my information is on the app. I usually get a email telling me to go to “patient knows best” but I can never sign into it so I go on the NHS app and it takes me directly to it and I see everything from GP and cardiologists, appointments, test results etc. I also get physical letters from cardiologist and letters on the app.
Hi, my results were available in under a week. If you have the NHS app it should appear within documents on there but if not be worth a chase as it seems to be one of the quicker turnarounds from the various cardiology diagnostics..
Same day. I'm given an appointment with my cardiologist for 1 hour after my echo. His offices are about 200 yards from the imaging lab; there's a coffee shop in between for the days when the imaging lab is running on time and I'm out early.
[Forgot to mention: I'm in Ireland, on the private system.]
On Tuesday the very nice lady who administered my ECG as part of an NHS annual check-up on my artificial heart valve said all was good, though I believe she would have been non-committal had there been. I suspect that when the consultant's letter arrives electronically it may note a couple of minor variations from the norm, as did the ECG a few weeks after the operation.
The consultant had also arranged for me to wear a Holter heart monitor for 48 hours a month ago, but I've yet to receive any feedback - probably he's been waiting for the ECG.
Twenty months ago, as I was waiting for a TAVI, I had a MRI scan of my eyes but did not get a reassuring letter giving the results for ten weeks.
My wife is in the same position as yourself. 3 weeks since scan. No letter or call. GP not heard and there is nothing on the app. You say no news is good news, however, it is still worrying not knowing.
This is the thing, when you get any scans done which involves the cardiology consultant, in my eyes you should get to see them after you had your scan done on the same day. I had to wait 12 months to see the cardiology consultant after my echo and ct scan was done at the hospital to see what the plan was going to be, Anxiety and panic attacks was soon real not knowing my results 😢
I will have one on Thursday and then see the cardiologist after it with the results. In NZ hospital.
I had mine in a week but they found something wrong . Then had a bubble echocardiogram month later and had those results in 2 weeks which was good as this was 2020. At the height of covid. But didn't get put on heart medication until August 2021 then had MRI on my heart in November 2021. I have PAF and a small hole in the side of my heart one of my flaps didn't shut before birth.
Had an angiography done last month as an in patient and told the results there and then . Slight furring in my right artery but didn't need a stent and my hole was the same size . Because it's small and I don't get chest pain safer to leave it as it could do more damage repairing it .
I always think no news is good news . As everytime something is wrong I hear quickly .
Hello I had my echocardiogram in October and I’ve heard nothing 🤷♀️
Hi there first of all, love your username, do you know who ordered your echo for you? If it was the doctors, you need to go back to then so you can be refured to the cardiology consultant to talk about your results. If it was the hospital who ordered the echo, do you know the doctors name? You could was contact the hospital cardiology department weather they have your results. Take care
About 45 minutes in my case for my first, ended up as a priority admission to hospital.
Second one saw me kept in as they found an issue with a valve, third I was discharged and fourth one I was told the result and shown the scan on the spot, I presume as everything was back to normal.
After any NHS test I submit a “Subject Access Request” to my NHS Trust requesting a copy of the relevant report and usually receive the full report within a few days.
Hi, I know it’s a worrying time. I had a stress echocardiogram several years ago and never got any results despite trying hard to chase it up.
I had an echocardiogram in November and was told at the time that the results would be sent to the nurse consultant who had requested it and it would take a month. A month later I received a copy of the letter to my GP with the results. I then got a text from my GP to tell me that 5 different drugs would be being dispensed and to go and collect them. I have not seen or spoken to a doctor or anyone regarding the findings which were Atrial Fibrillation which I was in at the time of the Echo , LV dysfunction and mitral valve leaking and regurgitating. My EF was 45% . There seems to be quite a difference in how these things are dealt with. Try not to worry too much. It seems communication isn’t always as good as we would like it to be. I hope you get your results soon and all goes well for you. X
I had mine on the 16th of January. However as the cardiologist requested a 24 hour ecg which my GP did not initially request, I have to wait until the 24th of February to receive the results.
Hello I did not have to wait long, it was within a couple of weeks. The Cardiologist sent the results to my G.P. I requested a copy for my files. Hope you do not have long to wait. I managed to get through to the Cardiologist's Secretary , she was very helpful in letting me know how long it was likely to be.
I had my echocardiogram on October 21st 2024 and got the results on December 23rd 2024
I have a yearly echo and normally hear within the week. So unfair having to wait so long
My results were available the day after my Echo and sent to my GP, unfortunately the letter got lost in their ‘system’! I found it on my NHS portal two weeks later. Remember that most of your health record is available to you on the NHS app, not all info is recorded, but might be worth a look … remember though that you will still need your GP or Cardiologist to interpret it as the language used can be somewhat scary and confusing, especially if you start getting Google to interpret it!
Or copy and paste (or take a photo and paste that) into chat gpt or other ai program and ask what it means. The explanations from the ai app are incredible. And you can ask follow on questions too.
Oh didn’t think of that, I don’t use AI, but it has its uses for sure … thank you
I never used it before until I just tried it with a medical letter I was struggling to understand. Now I use it whenever changing drugs and paste in the charts if my resting heart rate from my Fitbit too. I’m about to swap from bisoprolol to ranolazine and am a bit nervous as I am very sensitive to bisoprolol. It’s given me great advice on how to switch.
Ello I had to wait 8 weeks for my results !!
The technicians can see the results pretty much immediately. \If a doctor is present he/she can give you an idea of the main findings.
It took a week for the report to be done in my case, but I had to chase the secretary for it
Hi you maybe best to phone your doctors on Monday as the NHS app doesn’t always have much on it
Had mine in September and didn’t hear anything until November when I went to the Cardiologist appointment.
Mine was 5 weeks
Hi, I was referred for an echo in April 24, had the echo July 24, assumed no news good news. Accidentally found out I have BAV because it was on my hosp record about a month later and I was curious (did not know at that stage I had a heart issue). Then received an appointment date, for Jan 25 which I've just had. So it took 9 months from referral for me to find out what I have. Now I know I'm going to make sure I understand what I should receive when 🙂
You should be getting a reply about now
3 months last time.
Hi Blueferrero 😊. I hope the various replies have helped to reassure you. This forum is great. I am fortunately not an overly anxious person, but have been tested on that on occasion since my full LAD block HA last April. Since having emergency stenting I only had my 2nd ECG on 10th Jan this year. I have just this week received an appointment to see a Cardiologist (March 26th) where I presume I will finally get all the information re the current state of my heart. I think timescales are a post code lottery depending on the demand in your particular area, but also your condition. I am hoping my EF has increased from 45%. I have had Cardio Rehab which was great & just listen to my body. I am now about to join a gym. It is a tremendously scary experience overall and everyone is different. I am determined to be as healthy as I can be - the Drs can do amazing things, but I think a lot is also down to your own mind set too. Hoping you hear good news soon & all the very best in your recovery 👍👍🤞
I was very lucky, the lady doing the echo told me, as she was doing it, that everything was ok except that I had some ectopic beats and they were not causing any real issues. This was confirmed some weeks later by letter to my doctor
I got told at the appointment that it shwed a hole in my heart, and that it would go to the Multi Disciplinary Meeting (MDT) to discuss it.
Hi I had to phone my GP as they usually send results to GP and for some reason these days unless you chase they never contact you .Good luck Hope u get good result
My doctor received mine after a week. Based in Scotland.
Hi Blueferrero, Good morning, I am surprised you had to wait so long. ECHOCARDIOGRAM is a simple non invasive test like Ultrasound and as said by previous commentator, you shouldn't have to wait so long. I suggest you ring the hospital consultant who recommended the test and asked for the result. It may be no news is good news but even then you should know. Regards.
I always phone my GP surgery for any results and then book an appointment. GP health records for Scotland aren't included thru the NHS app.
At the hospital where I work it's 13 weeks
Same,I had my echo 3 weeks ago and heard nothing but was told at the time could take up to 6 weeks which is crazy really when you're desperate to know the results of this significant test. If you know the cardiologist getting hold of their medical secretary's email (can usually be found via NHS website/trust website) and emailing them but yes it's a bit of a lottery, some people get told on the day, others within a few day/week others have to wait and wait and chase up,not great I know but you're certainly not alone in being kept waiting.
First one I was t old results there and then; second one was about a week to 10 days. If GP requested it, the letter to him will be online in your NHS app.
I also have not heard anything despite having my echo done in Sept/Oct.I have chased it with my doctor .I think there is no problem because she said she asked the hospital and they said it "seemed" clear but I still need an appt (as yet not offered) .I think if there is a problem, they clearly get in touch early.Soo if you don't hear anything ,chase it with the surgery to ring up for you .But hopefully a long wait means an ok result
Hi, I had my Echocardiogram on the 16th December 2024 at Worthing Hospital, which was for continued monitoring and requested by a cardiologist registrar whom I saw in August 2024. Still no results so I submitted a subject access request requesting copies of the echocardiography report and the cardiologist report. Last week I received a copy of the echocardiography report dated the 17th December 2024 however I have been informed that there is no cardiologist report in the system 😳 so my GP will not have received any results either. Having read through the echocardiography report I still have moderate aortic stenosis which had previously been identified with a mean PG of 36mmHG and an AVA of 1.4cm2. I am now trying to ascertain next steps ie. continued monitoring or intervention and trying to track down a secretary but I fear that the registrar doesn't work from Worthing Hospital. I plan to submit a complaint through PALS. It is either that or wait until I end up in A&E or go private ... tell me what is the NHS all about????
After the first one I received a letter from the cardiologist who ordered it around 3 weeks later, the second one I had a letter from the cardiology department around 2 weeks later. They aren’t put up on the NHS app until my GP has looked at his copy which can be very variable at my surgery.
Around 5 months previous time. This time I’m still waiting for the report 2 months later.
When I had my initial one done, I had to wait 7days in spite of the technician telling me it would be at the GP's surgery in 3 hours. I was met by lies and obfustication by the receptionists. Eventually got a copy of the Echo and paid a cardiologist to read it for me.
PS it cost me £60 for the read. Well worth it
same day- 6 hours
hello. Yes you can chase the secretary again or get your gp to chase. Xx
I paid for a private echo got the result there and then . I also used a private gp who rang me on video call and went through the results with me the next day £250 quid very well spent . NHS are great within budget limitations however if you want to shortcut matters the private system used on an ad hoc basis for some tests are surprisingly cheap . And frankly what price do you put on reassurance .
mine took 4 months, but I know that they don't usually take so long. My GP didn't receive it either. Good luck it is all very stressful.
last year I had my echo in January and found out my results a month later on my pre booked cardiologist appointment.
I had one and I got them within 3 days hospital emailed them to my GP, then they emailed them to my cardiologist whom I was paying private to see as I’m waiting to have a cardioversion
My initial one was a severe heart failure diagnosis.. They called me straight away on the following morning. My second took ages. So the fact you have not got the results I would take it as a positive. Because most likely means not a serious problem.
Hope that helps
I had an echocardiagram recently and after 6 days I rang my cardio nurse and she gave me my results on the phone, however I am waiting for an appointment with my consultant to discuss the plan going forwad.
Just to add to this thread and the reply I've already made. This morning I had a telephone appointment with my GP surgery to discuss a couple of hospital letters received in December and January. (The doctor wasn't sure why I'd been asked to make the appointment, and neither was I as the letters contained nothing to worry about, but, hey, it's nice that the surgery is keeping an eye on me.) He 'd already received the results of my hospital ECG made last Tuesday - all is good. (This was a routine ECG to monitor the heart valve installed in July 2023.)
