Thank goodness for our NHS and BHF

Hi - this is the first time I have ever joined a forum so I am a complete novice at this!

After 62 happy and healthy years on this planet, 2 weeks ago I suffered the shock of my entire life. I woke up in the morning after a good nights rest and said to my husband that I felt a bad heartburn or indigestion. Thinking nothing of it I went for my morning routine and felt progressively worse.

Long story short, within half an hour paramedics were at the foot of my bed telling me I was having a heart attack. I am so grateful to our NHS, they whisked me directly to the nearest hospital, not via A&E but directly to CCU and into the Cath lab as an emergency. 2 hours after waking I was undergoing Angioplasty and had 2 stents inserted into my heart.

Thank goodness I am here to tell the tale - the whole procedure was astonishing and that’s down to the fantastic research and progress in medical science in large part attributable to BHF. I can’t say it hurt at any point but it was certainly surreal - I had this feeling that it could not be happening to me!

I thought I was fairly fit and healthy, walking 1 hour a day, twice a week yoga, swimming and generally active with my 4 grandchildren. We eat a good diet, no takeaways, no alcohol and I gave up smoking more than 20 years ago.

There is unfortunately a strong family history of heart problems and while I would ideally like to know what caused this problem I guess I will never be sure.

The fact is I have resolved to fully recover, enjoy everyday to the absolute max and live my life more aware of what my body is telling me.

welcome on board Rooksway

Well done for joining the BHF site. Our postings are monitored so you will avoid the plethora of alarmist jottings that lurk on other sites.

If you come across a member who you want to chat with, then there is a chat button towards the top of the screen.

Yes the NHS is fabulous when push comes to shove. I am so pleased that you came through the life threatening scenario.

your final paragraph says it all. Perhaps you could print those comments in large type and put it on a wall in your house.

Science is learning how to treat your ailments and you could be the one to break your family history.

I wish you well

Welcome and it's great to see such a positive post on having a heart attack.

Got to admit I was not as positive for a few months after mine, but yeh you are 100% right, it got fixed, you will recover and you will enjoy life to the max.

But just take it easy for a while and wish you the best :)

So pleased you had such quick and fantastic treatment. We never know what's around the corner and it's happening to more fit and healthy people as well. Take it easy and take time to recover. You might be offered cardio rehabilitation to make sure everything is going well now. Brian
